If anyone is interested in watching (or rewatching) possibly one of the saddest movies ever made, flip over to Turner Classic Movies at 9C.

Saddest. Movie. Ever.

However, I wouldn't suggest watching it unless you have a surplus supply of Kleenex and/or tequila. Possibly also something happy afterwards to balance it out. Thus why I keep this next to Totoro on the DVD shelf.

Turner Classic Movies is having Miyazaki/Ghibli Thursdays this month.

Nine movies including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke (both airing tonight), but also Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday and Pom Poko.

I'm (very pleasantly) surprised with the last three since they're harder to come by, particularly Only Yesterday, but they're all awesome. Only Yesterday and Pom Poko were both directed by the same guy (Isao Takahata) who directed Grave of the Fireflies (seriously, one of my favorite movies ever. Animated or otherwise). Highly recommended, but anyone who's seen it...? They know how mandatory kleenex and perhaps many an alcoholic substance is needed during viewing. Easily one of the most unrelentingly heart-wrenching movies I've ever seen. Only Yesterday and Pom Poko aren't so brutal, but still good (allbeit not as good as GotF, but then, GotF is fucking awesome).

This movie? It's going to be so. very. sweet. Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (new int'l trailer). Must see this now! Even if it had zero story... it's like every fancy anime trick with the whizbang computer animation and a bad ass sdtk (which I annoy the hell out of my co-workers with, only one of them speaks Japanese and she's more into the Ayumi Hamasaki bubblegum jpop scene). I want to see this like I want to see "Sky Captain". The pretty revolution has come folks.

[random geekness] Marvel wants to break into television once and for all? They can team up with Shinchiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) or Mamoru Oshii (GITS) or Rumiko Takahashi (Inu-yasha, Ranma 1/2).. or dare I say it, :gasps: Yoshitaka Amano (Vampire Hunter D). Although I'm not sure my geek nature could stand that many rapturous nerdgasms.... Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, (Dark) Phoenix flying around all big-eyed, angsty-brooding-male-leads, blood-soaked and/or super-sexy... but retaining that higher-end story telling quality, not compromising any of that integrity? It's too much to hope for, too many egos and too much red tape... it would never happen. Although if it did DC wouldn't be bitchslapping Marvel in TV like they so pathetically are now. Justice League Unlimited July 31 YAY![/random geekness]

This is for the "Inuyasha" fans on my friends list, but apparently Cartoon Network will air the first "Inuyasha" movie (Love That Transcends Time) sometime in the Spring '05. I think this came out about two years ago in Japan? It's cute and worth a watch, although not sure it's worth this long a wait. No idea why Viz has been sitting on their hands with it. IY looks like it's doing really well stateside (despite a rather unfortunate dub and CN's perpetual rescheduling), but you'd think Viz would strike while the iron is hot and push out the movie(s) faster than this. Eh. At least the US has it now. There are a few drawbacks to the movie. The story isn't canon (not uncommon with anime spin-off movies, but ... eh), the movie animation is different then the series (I prefer series) and Sesshoumaru is almost non-existant. He actually doesn't get any kind of part in the movies until the third unfortunately. *sighs* Fluffy. He's so the money.

Forgot to add, the first movie will also have limited theatrical release in a few US cities. I say save your money and wait until it's on CN... unless it's between this and "Catwoman"... then by all means, go see the IY movie.

A fourth IY movie is also on the way, coming out this December in Japan I think. Although what I hear of the story? It doesn't do anything for me (lots of IY / Kikyou. Meh).

This goes out to all my anime geek friends out there, but there's a new 6 min. trailer for Steamboy at The Movie Box. Unfortunately, it's all in Japanese, but it's from the guy who made Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo), so it's pretty and looks all kinds of cool. Steamboy does strike me as a bit more grounded in the story department compared to Akira, which was just batshit at the end. Inflating Tetsuo? Oy.

And I'm smack in the middle of a Tobey phase. Someone help me!!! **Spider-Man 2 spoilers** )
