Miyazaki Thursdays on TCM

Turner Classic Movies is having Miyazaki/Ghibli Thursdays this month.

Nine movies including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke (both airing tonight), but also Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday and Pom Poko.

I'm (very pleasantly) surprised with the last three since they're harder to come by, particularly Only Yesterday, but they're all awesome. Only Yesterday and Pom Poko were both directed by the same guy (Isao Takahata) who directed Grave of the Fireflies (seriously, one of my favorite movies ever. Animated or otherwise). Highly recommended, but anyone who's seen it...? They know how mandatory kleenex and perhaps many an alcoholic substance is needed during viewing. Easily one of the most unrelentingly heart-wrenching movies I've ever seen. Only Yesterday and Pom Poko aren't so brutal, but still good (allbeit not as good as GotF, but then, GotF is fucking awesome).

Haven't seen any of these movies/shows. If they were shown here, it had to be on only a few cable channels.

I believe Romy (angel_wing3) mentioned how much she cried while watching Grave of the Fireflies. She's a huge anime fan, so I'm guessing all these shows you listed are animes?

Oops, I had just noticed the "anime" tag on your entry. :) That answers my question. I don't watch much anime or TV, partly because I can't afford to get too addicted to anything nowadays! :D

If you ever feel like taking the plunge into anime nerdliness, however, Miyazaki/Ghibli is very worthy of addiction. ;)

Okay, I'll keep that in mind. :) Although this entry did revive my interest in two very old Japanese animation shows, Voltes V and Daimos. *goes off to look for episodes that my collection lacks*
