THE MASTER!!! Dressed like Eight/a vicar!!

All yur TARDIS iz belong 2 me!!!!111

And I was spoiled rotten for the episode, but I still had to hold my hands over my mouth to hold back the scream (but I did manage to spill my glass of wine jumping up in glee. One roommate threw a sofa cushion at my head, another was doubled over in laughter ... partly at my reaction and just plain Who hysterics). My heart actually breaks for some of my friends who have fallen off the Who train of squee this season, because holy hell in a handbasket, they don't know what they're missing!! S3 >>> everything

That. was. so. damn. good.

So good in fact I must cap for emphasis!!

Holy frakking hell... I don't know how the finale is going to top these last four episodes. Although I get a distinct feeling this ONE GUY, the Master, is going to topple the whole lot of the Dalek and Cybermen fanboy masturbation of "Doomsday"... single-handed (and with the help of his "friends" whatever the hell those skiffy spheres of death seemed to be in the promo. It's Phantasm!).

Not The Reavers. Although humans turned (de-evolved?) into beasts? "De-evolved". Just like the Macra and Hybrid Sec (and John Smith and Professor Yana... and maybe other Time Lords?) Funny that in any other episode I probably would have thought them complete tosh to the point of embarrassing, but... somehow I can let it all slide here.

And the Doctor is playing peepshow with stripped-down Jack sweating in a room.

"How did you ever cope without me." "Fantastic." Oh, the slash. It was strong in this ep. ((adds join Doctor/Master community to checklist)) On that note...

"Say my name." Cuz it goes back to the importance of words, saying his name makes him real. "No Time Lord has travelled this far" Master knew that too, didn't he? And he reappears as a child probably tricked some poor couple to take him in and raise him (that. dubious. bastard.)... but what happened to his TARDIS? Obviously it's either gone or that's where he was heading (prior infiltrating British politics, of course).

The Doctor and "The Professor" going on about their mutual brilliance.... while they're reminiscing about universities.

Although interesting the Master as a human (also with a teacher connotation, "professor") is a much nicer guy then the Doctor had been depicted (ok, maybe he might have been nicer had the TARDIS chosen a different era, but she Paul Cornell & Rusty didn't. They purposefully showed us the elitist, vaguely racist John Smith, while we see the meaning well, slightly bungling, kind-hearted old man of Professor Yana who tried to save a bunch of innocent people from cannibals and the fall of the universe). It'll be interesting to see if his time as kind, old Professor Yana influenced the Master at all, not unlike his time as John Smith seemed to influence the Doctor (the guy who doesn't do domestic and the overwhelming Lonely God emo not only inviting Joan along, but suggesting they try to start-up where they left off).

Capped as this is probably going to be the one and only time where the Master is crying and it means something real. Overhearing the Doctor talk about Daleks and the Time War... I'm going to say this was the loss of Gallifrey coming through which would mean it actually does invoke this genuine sense terrible sense of loss and mourning, so strong it breaks through the chameleon arching. Even in the Master. The death of one's whole planet and people (by the hand of the Doctor) would do it.

"Master.... I'm sorry" He apologizes! What is that about I wonder I wonder?? "Sorry" cuz he blew up all their planet and peoples ... or is it something more personal? Bet you anything Theta and Koschei, fighting side by side in the war (even if the Master may have had to be tricked or bribed into it possibly... with a new set of regenerations by chance??), but Theta left Koschei behind during some battle .... not unlike Solomon closing the grate on Frank in DIM (out of fear). HISTORY AND DRAMA AND BAND OF BROTHERS SLASH!! EEEEEEE!!!! History... and then Master steals the Doctor's TARDIS for revenge (kind of like sleeping with the Doctor's wife, isn't it? And with her putting up little protest)

"Say that again. It's rare." So many good lines in this ep!!

You know, however lovely this scene was (kind of hitting the same place in me Doctor+kitties do), it felt... anvilicious to me for some reason. Like we're supposed to notice Martha being friendly to this little boy. When I get that feeling it tends to Mean Something. What, I don't really know, but methinks this won't be the last time she sees that kid.

Of course, I don't think one can post about this ep without mentioning the OT3ness... guhHUH!!

Martha has her arm in Jack's and Jack's has his around the Doctor. Damn British teatime/family-viewing!! *hugs fanfic all the harder* The fact we will never see these three inflagrante on screen? Just hurts me on a deep personal level.

Like I wasn't aware of it before, but I'm more certain than ever now the Rose mentions are most definitely a plot device to make Martha feel bad / inadequate due to Rusty Going Somewhere with this Martha angst/inadequacy. BUT, I really want to know what Rusty is playing at already. These Martha scenes are so damn obvious (and painful to watch, my poor Martha), there's just no way Rusty isn't going somewhere with it and somewhere BIG. However, I'm really scared. The parallel between "The Professor"/Chantho with the Doctor/Martha was also gratuitous... and what does "The Professor" do to his brave assistant who wouldn't go anywhere without him? He killed her. Of course, that is The Master, the antithesis of The Doctor. So whatever the Master ends up doing, the Doctor will likely do the exact opposite (or so my mind goes wishful thinky with such simplicity, makes sense though)... but that's not to say Martha won't be in serious danger this finale. In fact, to drive in that polarity between the Master and the Doctor... I fear Martha will have to do exactly as Chantho did and be "the insect"/"the girl" that finally does "the Professor" in ... at the cost of her own life. Both the Master and the Doctor responsible for the deaths of their assistants, but the Doctor isn't going to let it alone and accept Martha being human and mortal and thus die like a human sacrificing herself bravely, indomitable till the end, to thwart his archnemesis and most likely to save him (in other words, all because of him). He's going to try to save her. Possibly even do the unconscionable - for him, anyway - to do it (Cuz, hello, Ursula and add Lazslo and "I won't lose her" from "42"). It will go directly back to the conundrum of "what it means to be human" (or changing what it means to be human and the extent that can be pushed). Exactly because of his obvious discomfort with Jack's immortality in this episode by way of Bad Wolf. It would be hypocritical on one side, but also puts the Doctor in the position - makes him fully understand - of how far one is willing to go for someone they love... yeah, I said it. I think he's going to finally realize, so near it being too late, how much he cares - loves - Martha.

BUT I'm left wondering... what the hell is Utopia?? Are we ever going to find out?? If I were going to engage in some wild speculating, my guess it's New Gallifrey. Time Lord essences trapped and need bodies - in this case, humans - as hosts, so the call was like the Pied Piper. A bit (exactly) like the Gelth (also refugees from the Time War). But that's kind of cracky as yet so I won't delve further. The Utopia Project? That anything akin to the Lazarus Project (both intending to extend human life seemingly beyond the impossible / normal capacity... one sponsored by Saxon, the other by...???).

The promo? Are the Doctor, Martha or Jack even in this episode (depending on how quickly the Doctor can fix Jack's time agent vortex manipulator)? Maybe not, but I find myself not too troubled by that notion if it's 42 min of John Simm doing what he does (with the amazing acting) and set-up for "Saxon's" time infiltrating Earth and the British politics (I'm sure the Doctor will be thrilled in his role deposing the last prime minister too... setting it all up so Saxon can step right up to the plate. Brilliant Doctor you douchebag. I WILL cap that two thumbs up. It's a moral imperative that it's iconed.

AND HOLY SHIT!! U.N.I.T.!! "Hermits United" indeed, these eps are like old skool reunion. Looks like the Murkans took it over completely with Torchwood in the UK (if the Brig is there, I probably will die from squee, no real question there sad as that is). Not that it really matters though... as from the looks of that trailer "Saxon" is going to pull a Slitheen and kill them all. Is this is all UNIT is good for? Mass murder in conference rooms? *sighs*

And what is "the sound of drums"? Time Lord marching band music (to inevitable doom)?? The call to war? If it's Time Lordy related, why does the Master hear it, but not the Doctor?

I think in an act of goodwill (and workin on that impoverished ascetic lifestyle I'm apparently aiming at) I already know what I'm getting everyone I know for Christmas this year. The world my ignorant murkan family/friends will know the love that is Who!

I adore your cappy goodness *happy sigh* I was also majorly spoiled yet very shocked cause apparently I don't get spoiled properly and I had none of the finer details. This was awesome. I love your theories and will just sit here and nod and hope to god that you're right. The beating Martha with the "Rose was perfection" stick has to have a point. I am downloading Life on Mars finally so I can watch the pretty and finally be part of the John Simm lovers. Oh and maybe there'll be an extra on the S3 dvd with smutty Jack/Ten/Martha scenes. It could happen...=)

And you know even with massive spoilage - hell even if you'd read the script - you still don't get the full scale of acting brilliance that is Jacobi and Simm... which is pretty much death by itself, forget all the manic goodness and hot HOT OT3 action of the ep overall.

The beating Martha with the "Rose was perfection" stick has to have a point.

There's really no way it can't. And despite Rose being Rusty's Mary Sue, for once, I'm paranoidly not suspecting it's some subversive attempt at beatification It's specifically being used to develop Martha's character... but where is Rusty going with all of it?

I am downloading Life on Mars finally so I can watch the pretty and finally be part of the John Simm lovers.

You won't be disappointed and probably will have sudden urges for Roxy Music and/or T.Rex after watching the eps which I can only count as win. ;)

Oh and maybe there'll be an extra on the S3 dvd with smutty Jack/Ten/Martha scenes. It could happen...=)

I comfort myself thinking there was an hour or so edited out of the final cut of the ep for watershed's and fangirly sanity's sake.

Stop it.....

HA!! I'm in heaven right now, honest to Gawd heaven. Fabulous episode. Didn't think it was possible, but jeezus, it just keeps getting better and better as time goes on.

The story, as it was, was a bit...well...meh. I'm talking the whole "let's get these poor humans away from this dastardly planet and get them to Utopia where they can live happy and healthy and blahblahblah". Yeah, whatever. I looked at this one the same way I looked at 42, in that it wasn't so much the storyline that was important, but the interaction of the main characters that was. Here I focused on the dynamic of the five main characters, and the main "story" be damned.

Lots of exposition here. Boat loads of it in fact, and that was far more important than getting the damn rocket ship to fly, wasn't it? The ship business was just filler (or was it? Is there more to come I wonder?) Doctor/Professor, Doctor/Jack, Doctor/Martha, Jack/Martha, Martha/Chantho...jeezus. It took me three viewings, in a row, to get it all into my tiny adled head. It was well worth the wait of the season, (and the previous two included) to get to this point in time. Slowly, it is all coming together. "Oh, I get it now!!!" There were so many "Holy shit" moments here. So many in fact that my little one snuggled up next to me to watch, just to see what all the fuss was about as I was holding my hand over my mouth, nodding furiously.

"What have I done?"
The Doctor's face, when he realized/remembered what Boe had said. Heartbreaking. (I laughed hysterically at the OGers slapping themselves in the head for missing that one) My heartstings were being plucked and stroked furiously by the "Professor", and his pain, even though I *knew* better...still. The poor old man, just like John Smith. *sheds a single tear*.

The episode coming up will be choke full of all sorts of Simm/Saxon goodies. We get to see Martha's family too. (and those horrible eyebrows of doom too...catty? You bet) I suspect it will be Saxon heavy, but I also suspect we'll see a good deal of the now angry/confused/so-sorry Doctor desperately attempting to return to Earth to face his foe.

But...but...only two more weeks to go and then...it's OVER?!?!?!!! Why can't this go on longer? (I'm spoiled I guess by the american way, longer seasons and all that) It just can't be over yet!!! Then the too long wait until the Christmas episode. Crap....

Well, we have the new season on sci-fi in July, and then Torchwood in September (but why so bass-ackwards? Shouldn't we have Torchwood first, and then the new series of Doctor Who? Sure, confuse us all why don't you...dammit.

but jeezus, it just keeps getting better and better as time goes on.

It's astounding, isn't it? This season has almost solely restored my faith in television. Although it makes me think nasty half-empty thoughts that the finale can't possibly get anymore entertaining, can it?!

The story, as it was, was a bit...well...meh.

I ... can't really disagree with you there. Like the whole Not!Reavers Futurekind? How shit would they have been in just about any other ep/series?

Here I focused on the dynamic of the five main characters, and the main "story" be damned.

And chemistry was bursting at the seems.

The ship business was just filler (or was it? Is there more to come I wonder?)

To tell you the truth, I don't think it's over yet. Remember Jacobi!Master pulled that disk from the console saying "Utopia" very snidely? If I were going to spec, I'd bet The Master had something to do with sending out that Utopia call for whatever his nefarious purposes and The Professor sent those people right into Saxon's trap (or he sent them into a trap he'd set up himself in the future... err, past.... oh the joys of time travel!).

"What have I done?"
The Doctor's face, when he realized/remembered what Boe had said.

It's totally not over yet either. Lots of folks have been speccing the Doctor is going to get a huge karmic bitchslapping c/o the mounting hubris the past two seasons (and, just, you know, the general bastardy attitude he's had. Wasn't he just total. bastard. to both Jack and Martha in this ep?). One thing I brought up above has got to come into play, his deposing of Harriet Jones (and her "Golden Age") which led it open ground for the rise of Saxon. That should garner at least one look of devastated horror. Oh my gods it's going to be good!

I also suspect we'll see a good deal of the now angry/confused/so-sorry Doctor desperately attempting to return to Earth to face his foe.

And the facing of consequences of his actions.

But...but...only two more weeks to go and then...it's OVER?!?!?!!!...

...Well, we have the new season on sci-fi in July

Srsly, about the only thing consoling me of the fact the season (of frighteningly squeeing awesome!!!) is almost over is we get to rewatch it all in July. Although what pisses me off is I don't think I've seen a single Who S3 promo. Not faulting "Eureka" at all as I do like that show and it is Sci-Fi's own product, but... it's starting July 11 and I've seen at least two dozen promos for it the past couple weeks. Who is starting July 6 (if I'm not mistaken)... and nothing. Which is just pure rubbish. They should be promoting like crazy (as it deserves it as it's one of the best seasons yet. Srsly, I think it would kill in the ratings and actually get some new fans if Sci Fi would promote the damn thing).

and then Torchwood in September (but why so bass-ackwards? Shouldn't we have Torchwood first, and then the new series of Doctor Who?

Probably cuz performance-wise, Murkan cable has more vested in Who than it does Torchwood (which... hasn't really done that great overall in the UK and it's kind of been panned by the critics, so doesn't really encourage overseas investors). Who also aims at a wider audience, so it's more profitable that way than the more adult TW.

Then the too long wait until the Christmas episode. Crap....

Jesus. Don't even remind me. What pains me (as teetering on the rabid side of Martha luv as you probably guessed), there's nothing definitive about whether she's going to be in the next season or not. I could deal with it if she left as this is the nature of Who, but... I can't say it wouldn't break my heart a little this is the only season we'd get of her and that chem between David & Freema. I've loved Ten all the more much in part due to the dynamic with Martha. I almost feel like I wasn't truly sold on his Doctor (as a character with some layers) until this season.

To be honest, I don't think I've watched any real television in months. The odd CSI here and there, and the occasional House episode, but...on the whole? Ich is my feeling about television these days. But I do see what you mean about this upcoming finale. How the hell can the bar keep getting raised? It has to find a terminal point, doesn't it? If these few episodes the last couple weeks are making me wet myself with glee, what is to come? Spontaneous combustion?

I ... can't really disagree with you there. Like the whole Not!Reavers Futurekind? How shit would they have been in just about any other ep/series?

The whole thing was rather pedestrian in terms of characters wasn't it? They just simply weren't important to the bigger picture, so they were just filler, in need of a good dentist.

To tell you the truth, I don't think it's over yet. Remember Jacobi!Master pulled that disk from the console saying "Utopia" very snidely? Well, I can't believe the whole spaceship will just be forgotten, so the ship may be important in upcoming events. They must be. Utopia? I have some thoughts on the matter, but I will not share them because they are rather out there and are possibly due to my lack of sleep. More to come on that front as I think further on the matter.

I like this Doctor. I really do. I mean I liked him before (basically because Tennant is so damn cute I want to adopt him and call him my own), but the character is just growing by leaps and bounds. I simultaneously want to slap him silly and then hug him to pieces. He's a prick, then a sad victim, then the emo bits, then an odd goofball, then... I liked Chris. He was why I continued to watch the show after I saw the first few. He was the Doctor, new and brash and bold and vulnerable. Then we got Tennant, and like a brick to the head, you had to like him. You had to let him into your heart, despite the fact that he was a bastard, despite the fact that he is capable of so much...stuff. I don't know...it's sucking me in like a giant vortex. Not that I'm protesting mind you. I want to be sucked in, and frankly I didn't expect to be sucked in with such vigor.

Am I making sense? (Just watched the damn episode again for Crissakes) Bring on Sound of Drums, bring on Last of the Timelords. I can die happy in two weeks time....spontaneous combustion here I come!!!!

Looks like it!! Hope Rusty's insurance is paid up cuz he's going to be owing us some punitive damages for any death by firey squee he induces.

The whole thing was rather pedestrian in terms of characters wasn't it?

I'd call them more plot devices then characters. I don't even know why they were given any dialogue at all (especially if they're just going to hiss it out). Keep them like the Reavers or 28 Days Later zombies with a lot of roaring and grunts if they're going to be so... bestial anyway. But maybe that would have scared the kiddies to much?

Well, I can't believe the whole spaceship will just be forgotten, so the ship may be important in upcoming events. They must be.

Otherwise that's one ship that flew into major plothole limbo. I agree, that ship has to be going somewhere. I've heard... rumours about things, but not sure if they have any relevance to that particular ship.

Utopia? I have some thoughts on the matter, but I will not share them because they are rather out there and are possibly due to my lack of sleep.

Hey dude, farbeit from me to criticise anyone and insomnia-induced crack. Feel free to share when you get the ideas together.

Am I making sense?

Total sense. ;) Nothing really to add but ITA, although Tennant's Doctor can scare the bejesus out of me sometimes. The dude can invoke creepy/menacing like no other Doctor. Nine was so wounded when he turned menacing, I was never totally threatened... but Ten? Ten will cut you, then blow up your house (with your kids in it) if he doesn't like you/you threaten humans/the Earth/his companion. The end of FoB? *cringes* He's almost too easily provoked in ways.

Just watched the damn episode again for Crissakes)

The rewatch factor is a bit on the absurdly high side. I already know this is the disc of the dvds all be abusing like mad. Especially those last 10 min.

Exactly how I feel about Tennant. With Nine, I never felt any menace, in let's say Dalek for example. I think it's the eyes. Tennant uses his eyes better than most actors I can think of. He can show sheer ethereal joy one minute, then chill the blood in your veins the next. One thing I also noticed about him in this last episode. Ten was actually acting like an adult for the majority of the show. Throughout the show he was giving off a decidedly grumpy old fart vibe, particularly in regards to Jack. Even during their little talk, it was more like a teen talking to his father (wise old man) than two peers having a heart to heart. At least that's what I was seeing.

Dammit. I worked overnight last night, and I spent the whole night thinking about this episode and what is to come. All night!!!

And the Master was the giddy manic one. Leaving Ten to stand there in dumbfounded horror and shock.

Almost like somewhere between a jealous pissing contest and a midlife crisis, yeah? "I have a sports car, you have a space hopper" (mine is bigger than yours). Who else noticeably drives a sports car this season? Martha's midlife-crisising dad Clive.

I've been thinking about something. In the episode, just about everything mentioned about time travel and the like have a headache/sound-of-drums inducing effect on the Professor. All except for the words "Time Lord". Those two words had no visible effect on Yana. Ten is actually waiting for a response from the people around him, and mentions something about being humbled or something. But one would think that "Time Lord" would have caused Yana some reaction, right? Nothing. Daleks, yup. Time travel? uh huh.

Oh!!! Wait a minute!!! Is The Doctor even referred to as "THE Doctor"? *runs off to watch again* Is he just *A* Doctor, instead of the title *the* Doctor....hmmmm....

But that Time Lord thing has really got me thinking. Probably means nothing at all....

Anyway...have you heard about what is to come? Something about Sonics, and a bit of what you mentioned above regarding size? HAHAHA!!!!!!
