So, Twilight. It would hardly be exclusive to this series, but can someone explain to me how something can be at once so atrocious, you know full well of the atrocious as it is there right in your face, yet once you pick it up you somehow just. can't. stop? Is it the trainwreck factor? So Horrible You Can't Help But Gawk thing? I don't know, maybe it's just my own faulty mind, but I'd have really thought I'd had my fill of gratuitous, published fan fiction after The Da Vinci Code from the NYT bestseller list. I was apparently wrong.

[livejournal.com profile] mrstater, I'm quite certain this whole thing has traumatized me. Although I vow to you if I ever mention "Rpattz" seriously ever? You're more than welcome to come right up here and shoot me. A lot.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Last book I read like that was A Great and Terrible Beauty. It was horrible in just about every way it's possible for a book to be horrible. It had shoddy characterization, predictable plots, convenient plot devices, everything. Yet, I read it in two sittings. Despite the horribleness.

I'm convinced it comes from some last vestige of inner tweener girly girl that pathetically lingers on the terribly exciting slumber parties when your friend's older bro/sister would rent "Dirty Dancing" for you and it was oh so scandalous. I do wish my inner old curmudgeon would fit her with cement shoes and drown her in the river. It's just gone from scandalous to masochistic now so very very many years later. Worse is that I know my sad sorry self will probably be reading that fourth Twilight book when it comes out.... because I can't stop!! I need an intervention I think, possibly involving blunt, heavy objects.... or perhaps for the less messy, some Borges or Colette something for the grown-ups not inspired by Muse and resurrect some brain cells.

Sounds like a good theory. Replace Dirty Dancing with Nightmare on Elm Street though. I've not read the Twilight books. My (older) sister loves them though. I read the back of one of them and put it back on the shelf. I fear if I ever did pick it up I would end up in your situation.

Resist!! Although what I find most amusing and soul-scarring about these books is that they almost never come alone. Twilight is a whole bloody series and A Great and Terrible Beauty is part of a trilogy, isn't it?

Twilight has a movie and everything. I will resist with my giant pile of To Be Read books.

AGaTB is a trilogy. I've almost picked up the second book more then once. I think it's like badfic. When you look up and realize you're on chapter 20 and it's been 5 hours and you can't figure out why you're reading it, but you go on to chapter 21. Or maybe that's just me.

But it's like the fact that there is so much of it must mean it's good. So I keep reading trying to find the good and it never happens.

Ah dunno, but I'm poking around that trainwreck right now and I Cannot Stop; think I may be getting an allergic reaction to the word "chuckled."

I'm certain there must be a drinking game for these books somewhere. Like every time someone says "chuckled", take a shot. Every time Bella trips, mentions how clumsy she is or injured herself due to clumsiness, take a shot and a Vicodin. Every time Bella mentions she's in total and utter despair because Edward isn't around her, take two shots and some heroin.

Have you gotten to that "meadow" bit yet? Oh the lolarity.
