It seems if you want genuinely good, scary movies that make your skin crawl (that don't make you puke from motion sickness ::glares at Blair Witch:: and where there aren't actresses in them that make you scream "Shut up!" every two seconds) we've got to import them from Korea or Japan. Of course, in all fairness, I actually liked the American version of "The Ring" a lot ("Ringu" was a little too fantastical for my liking... but then it's ending felt more satisfying). Then again I'm slightly biased since I think Naomi Watts is one of the best Australian imports since Hugh Jackman.

I recently found out there's going to be an American remake of the ubercreepy "Dark Water" (Honogurai mizu no soko kara) starring Jennifer Connelly, John C. Reilly and Tim Roth to name a few. This remake hopefully will be on par with "The Ring", the cast looks great, but I'd seriously suggest watching the original DW first if you get the chance before you get spoiled by Hollywood big budget effects and A-list celebs. There's just something so much scarier about a movie that depends more on creativity and clever camera-work/cinematography as opposed to CGI.

In related news, I mentioned "Siren" for PS2 earlier in my LJ. The game was recently selected as one of the most anticipated games of 2004 by GameSpy. Not exactly a film, but... GAH. This looks freaky! The primary characters are all rendered by scanning in *real* Japanese actors, so the characters look like real people. It's going to kick up the creepy factor 10 fold. You're also not playing as badass cops (i.e., Resident Evil) or whatnot, you're playing as *normal* people. So the game is more hide and seek then confrontational and you have scary monsters and zombies chasing after you. You play as 10 different people in the course of the game. There's apparently this ability where you can somehow telepathically see through the eyes of other characters (alive or dead)... including as characters you've played as before (no longer alive!). I've read there will be times when you'll be able to see yourself via this ability (Seeing things through the eyes of other characters - you won't know if it's someone good or someone bad looking at you!). S.c.a.r.y.

You want to scare the shit out of me? Make me watch "The Ring" again. Man, I like scary movies (the teenage kinds, mostly), and the ones that scare you not by scary guys or gross animals, but by engulfing you from your psyche, that make you think, and make you stay in suspense.

Like The Ring, you'd say. But I did *not* like that one. Nothing had scared me more (except when I watched an exorcism-type movie when I was about 9). I stayed the whole frigging week on alert. And sadly, I'm not joking here. I still can't watch images of it or reminders from the movie. Too much for me.

heee I really love this movie. I think it's was a great concept. Of course it was originated in the Japanese version. But seriously... who doesn't own a television? Everyone owns one! I wonder how many people were looking at their TVs warily after watching "The Ring"? heee Some creepy demon girl is going to come out of it in the middle of the night... or not. Another scary, uncommon thing about this movie was that the girl could get you anywhere at any time, day or night. That dude died in broad daylight. That just doesn't happen in most movies. It's often the same cliche scenarios of "It was a dark stormy night" blah blah. Not that I don't like the silly cliche from time to time, but it gets tired. Call me desensitized.

I wouldn't mind that scenario of the screen image literally coming to life ... if it weren't the creepy girl. Maybe during that "hall" scene in "X2". He can just keep right on running. :D

Definitely. Those are the best ;)
