SGA 306 - The Real World
Aug. 18th, 2006 10:34 pmAnd now I've successfully put "Life on Mars?" in my head for the rest of the night. Of course, the song was in my head during most of the ep ("Life on Mars", a fine show from the Beeb about a main character who wakes up in a place and time he's not supposed to be and also often finds himself in battles of will). Of course, that's about where the similarity ends between LoM and "The Real World". LoM has neanderthal Manchester cops getting in fisticuffs every other scene with T. Rex or Bowie playing to set the mood. This ep was just rather... meh. Barring a few creepy visuals here and there. It does tell me Torri can be better than what she's usually given, but... the ep just didn't do anything for me one way or another. This ep was a bit harsher than Carter's Montana ranch, but ... we have seen this before, haven't we? And there was no pretty flying (or burning) city in this one to distract me.
What happened to the nanites harvesting Weir's tissue? They're still in her, yes? I suppose we're to expect another Possessed!Weir episode sometime in the not too distant future? Of which John will heroically dive into her conscious all self-sacrificingly again to save her because he is her Guardian Angel... or Bodhisattva ... or something.
It really does feel like the Shep/Weir is being pushed harder this season. I felt it especially in this ep. Not that I care too much, but... that might have contributed to the ep doing nothing special for me. Shep/Weir in itself has always struck me as a resounding "Meh". Thus whatever scene associated with it feels "meh". Those scenes seemed to pop up a lot in this ep.
Of course, Beckett's plan to harvest the nanites to the Wraith tumor seemed to work well enough (a bit too well). Makes me wonder what or how the Asurans managed to not wipe out the Wraith long ago... if it was such a mandatory compulsion in their programming as those nanites seemed to prove (barring the nanites that had already absorbed Weir's tissue). They can keep themselves from turning into scrubbing bubbles against the Wraith ... but can't alter themselves enough to remove their aggression?
And Weir was the only one infected? Why didn't Teyla or Ronon get infected when they tried to pull Niam off Weir? Replicators don't wear clothes, do they? The clothes we see are just more nanites, are they not? Oberoth (and all he was wearing) in "Progeny" seemed to prove that morphing right through the door. Could Niam only infect one at a time... or was only directed to infect Weir? If that's the case, it doesn't seem to make much sense. Even the nanites back in "Hot Zone" seemed more effective (genuinely aggressive) killing machines.
Heh. "Special code"... has anyone even managed to open the site? I can't. I click on the "code" banner and I keep getting redirected to the Atlantis homepage. Of course, unless it's explanations of why this ep wasn't as intriguing as the 10000 yr old Weir ep, I suppose I can live without seeing the suprspeshul footage.
ETA. Just watched the extra footage. A bit more intriuging than I was expecting, but not necessarily mind blowing. There was spoiler footage for another two-parter coming up. That was interesting. Although to be expected. [ How many Replicators were still in that city when the Atlanteans ran out of Dodge? Didn't Niam say "millions"? Don't know how the hell they're supposed to combat millions of Replicators (some wanting to "ascend" or not)... with aggressive streaks they can't control and probably more with a grudge to settle. You'd expect to see them again (and since they're, you know, the new big bads and all). Also... it looks like McKay, Beckett, Shep and Liz are in the SGC in that footage? Did Teyla and Ronon get to tag along (or did they get stuck in Atlantis while the Reps apparently storm in)? I admit, a tiny part of me does want to see a Teal'c / Ronon face-off, so I hope they got to tag along. ]
