Vampire Hunter IshiDa
Mar. 30th, 2006 12:41 amEditing to add... YES I was tempted to title this "Vampire Princess Uryuu", for all of the rabid Uke!Ishi being carried around by Chad like a helpless maid, needing rescue most of the time these days, the fainting spell and Ichi having his Shatner moment yelling Ishi's name into the heavens ... but I resisted. Can't really say why... if for the only reason I find this recent poor, poor pathetic and helpless streak a bit on overkill (it does fit in the current anime narrative... but it is a little frustrating to watch, especially remembering how helpless Uryuu isn't and how much he can PWN someone like Mayuri who oh-so-deserves another PWNing and soon) and I do think it will be ending probably much sooner than later ... and when it does, it will be a sight to behold (Superpowered, Broken!Gloved-Ishida all or most of the time? Call me weak to the big.damn.fight.scenes but... yes please!).
I realize there's already been a mommy-reference regarding Yoshino (and Ishida's possible attraction towards her... Oedipus much?), which could be the extent of the potential incesty overtones (since they seem to be a Kubo requirement) yet I'm still banking on this chick being actually related to him somehow. My money is on Grandma!Yoshino... which might make Kariya his possible grandfather. Thus could be the reason why Yoshino says Kariya was "manipulating" her? Although this supposed "manipulation" could be little more than Yoshino being bitter about Kariya not being the saintly savior she'd believed he was. Then again, Kariya seems to be damn convinced Yoshino won't leave him (just arrogance, some kind of Bound pride or something else)?
Here's a hypothetical scenario for you: Kariya creates daughter with Yoshino... daughter runs off to forbiddenly hook-up with a Quincy... has a Quincy son... daughter dies/disappears... thus why Kariya was "manipulating" Yoshino but also possibly why Yosh is determined to protect Uryuu (aka, the supposed last of the Quincy). Blood is thicker than water, but she also wants to turn Kariya's manipulation against him? Of course, Kariya could be predicting all her movements, hence the evil grinning in the ep (but Ryuuken's involvement may come as a potential sideswipe... for Kariya and the audience. I can't shake the daddy mention in ep72, nor can I the apparent coincidence of Yoshino bringing Uryuu to his father's hospital. Considering Ryuuken's importance in recent manga chapters and my perhaps misplaced hope that the anime is slowly but surely heading back towards canon?). Yoshino does seem to have something of a little Yoruichi and Urahara vibe in her... considering she's old / wisened in her own right, I'd bet she's nearly as good at the art of (goodly intented?) deception / clandestine behavior as either of those two are. Urahara can certainly seem like he's being sincere / truthful a lot of the time too... but you can never quite tell with him. Yoshino's story just seems a little too bleeding-heart, woe-is-me to be wholly for real imho... and convenient that is exactly the sort of story that could push just the right buttons regarding Uryuu and his Quincy hero complex. With or without powers. The Bound modus operandi seems to be lure hapless humans into their soul-sucking trap via pretty, celestial-like singing (catch more flies with convoluted, woe-is-me honey than vinegar).
Just a little heavy-handed with the ubercreepy/corny Dracula's castle soundtrack? Seriously, I'm waiting for Bela Lugosi to saunter up in one of these eps.
Random, but that scene where Young!Yoshino seems to attempt to block out the sun... it reminded me of this (potential mirror?) scene in the manga of Uryuu holding his hand against the crescent moon while he was training with daddio.
And Ishida wants to 'help' Yoshino? Heh. I assume this is going to be the anime-version of "Uryuu gets back his powers", but... it will be interesting how exactly it plays out here. Ishida turned vampire hunter with an incesty relationship with his experienced vampire savior / possible grandmother... wouldn't take it out of the realm of Kubo-land. Although how much of a baby am I that I still want Ryuuken to step in somewhere? It could be so easy for him to just show up too. Especially now in that it does seem Uryuu will likely be getting his powers back soon or at least try to get them back.
Although I am a little confunded as to why we're getting apparent Kenpachi / 11th squad backstory and a former 11th squad Shinigami with really bad :cough:Eddie Munster:cough: hair (working with das vampyr) paired up with Ishida's filler storyline. I suppose this is just my obsessive need of symmetry of some kind, but if those two storylines are supposed to relate or connect to each other... how? My guess it's ultimately going to have to do with patriarchal issues (then again, that could also be my desire to see the anime start veering back towards the manga... of which, Ishida's father and Ichigo's have much more significant roles in specific ways and they could conceivably show up in the anime any time, possibly soon).
This could be grossly anticipatory (and not all that necessary, but...), Ichigo have a half-brother he didn't know about? Considering Isshin's eccentricities (He looks up his daughter's skirts for Christ's sake. The man is a pervert), known womanizers amongst the Shinigami (::throws rose petals at Shunsui::) and how very OLD he must be - at least according to the manga - there's no guarantee Masaki was his first wife (and/or tryst). I also totally picture Isshin and Shunsui wholeheartedly diving into the Seiretei sake reserves and taking part in many a'hook-up. Isshin and Ichinose may have have been aware of their relationship, but perhaps due to Isshin's position (and/or who Ichinose's mother may have been) they kept it under wraps. However, without getting into all of Isshin's bastard children, it also could easily be another relation or surrogate/adopted father type relationship a la Souken/Uryuu or Kenpachi/Yachiru. Hell, maybe Isshin even raised Ichinose to some degree (maybe even named him thus with the "one" in his name for 11th Division).
Of course if Isshin is Ichinose's biological / surrogate / adopted dad, I could imagine why he may be disgruntled in a Soi Fong-ish way at Issh and why Ichino had a change of heart regarding Kenpachi murdering his taicho. Issh knows Ken didn't really murder him, but he's also not about to stick around while daddio sneakily traipsed off to the real world. Ichino exiled himself into the real world looking for Issh, waiting to get revenge... or Issh contacted him later telling him where he was? If that's the case, Ichino's position with the Bound could be very questionable.
I'm also curious at the reactions from the rest of the Karakura kids when/if Ishi reunites with them. Ishi possibly trying to defend Yoshino and making claims they should all help her and she's a victim per her sob story (despite repeated, successful kidnapping attempts, nearly killing Ichigo & Rukia and her being a soul-sucking vampire who tried it twice already) ...while his friends (:cough:Ichigo:cough:) blow up with mass amounts of pissed-off incredulity. It will be interesting if some or any of them will see things from his (blushy, 15-yr-old boy) pov or they'll help him simply based on friendship or the situation when the reunite will be a combative one thus throwing any/all conversation straight out the window.

Date: 2006-03-30 02:50 am (UTC)I so want my uke!Ishida to stand up and do something truly macho, but from the looks of it he gets thrown into a wall next episode. I don't know how much more indulgence in this fair maiden stuff I can take--unless the animators disrobe him to distract me from it all.
Ichinose really has awful hair. But a new Shinigami is interesting--esp one with a relationship to Kenpachi. Think the filler will tie into the OVA? Someone's got to pull that sealed sword out of its rock (or that's probably OVA 3)

Date: 2006-03-30 03:47 am (UTC)Could be Yoshino is his Masaki and/or Rukia figure (Rukia the moon to Ichigo's sun... Masaki the sun the family spun around, etc)... or is she his Anti-Ichigo? A little of both? One might think that would be Ryuuken (with his stark light/white hair and cold, arrogant demeanor contrasting his son's cold, yet chivalrous sensitivity), but Ryuuken hasn't showed up yet. It's possible Yoshi and Ryuu could be two peas in a pod.... possibly not all bad people (or don't have all alterior motives or bad intents with Uryuu), yet they're also shown to have openly deceptive, not-so-nice characters (Yoshino as a Bound and Ryuuken as a hidden Quincy, amongst their plethora of questionable actions). Doing what they have to do. Ishida seems to be willing to give her credence ... but that's not to say Ichigo & friends could or should.
Actually, the more I think about Yoshino's actions, the more I question her vulnerability. It's possible that in part she might have been sincere (i.e., her dislike and disillusionment regarding Kariya, loneliness, etc) and I do think she will play a role in Uryuu getting his powers back in the anime ... but it could also still be part of some big put-on. Bound seem to lure people into their traps by celestial-like, sad singing a la Pied Piper. Her sob story could be another type of 'sad, pretty song'. Poor, powerless Ishi - admittedly as "pathetic" as he can get these days - and his soul seem to be in the palm of her hand. What she does with his soul is entirely up to her.
Ichinose really has awful hair. But a new Shinigami is interesting--esp one with a relationship to Kenpachi. Think the filler will tie into the OVA?
Truthfully? I doubt it, although OVA2 (or, hell, "Bleach" in general) did have a hint of Arthurian / (crazy) Sword in the Stone to it.
I'm not sure how much Kubo involvement there seems to be between the anime and manga or how much he may be tying them together. We see Kenpachi show up in OVA2 as well and he had little reason to be there, just as it seems to be with the anime as yet. I don't know... it does look like Kubo seems to particularly be pushing Kenpachi for some reason (in the anime). I do wonder if he's bound to show up in the manga out of no where.
As much as I have a shameful weakness for the uke.... it's gotten just a tad ridiculous. Although I haven't a clue how he's supposed to get his powers back in the anime. At least without it seeming convoluted or utterly melodramatic/cliche (OHNOES! Emo!Vampire-lady takes a Freedo in the gut 4 Ishi and he gets all superpissed!!! ::arrows shoot out from every orifice PWNING all Bounto::). I want to see the anime move away from the uberly!uke Ishi, but... not necessarily all of a sudden. Of course, this whole infatuation with Yoshino and swearing his powerless Quincy power to defend her came out of absolutely no where too.
