a little iratus in all of us
Feb. 24th, 2006 10:05 pmLet's see if I remember how to frickin' update this sucker. Damn. It's been like four weeks.
I still have all kinds of love for this ep. Oh those unethical stupid bastards... how I adore them. They're like SG1's shop-lifting cousins SGC so desperately tried to get rid of so shipped them off far far away to military school called the Pegasus Galaxy. How this ep busts open that morally dubious can of worms. This has been one of my favorite eps this season. A little (ok, a lot) because of Connor Trineer who is awesome as Michael and I so hope he comes back (oh PLEASE let him be the supposed recurring Wraith character in S3 and CT is still playing him!!). A little because of Michael the character (who was such a nice guy, but... Wraith!).
"You're the only one who understands.":
Also, I admit I love "Michael" because of my sick fascination in the Michael/Teyla possibilities (not necessarily shippery but ... definitely not negating the possibility either). Maybe it's just because CT has chemistry with everything, but god damn. The sparring? Teyla the only one really trying to be nice to him (even if she was lying through her teeth, at least she made some kind of effort. It tussled me Shep blasting his ass down before the transfer to the Alpha Site. The plan was a big fubar poochscrew from the off and should have never happened, but, seriously, how was 'Mike' supposed to react or think when pretty much everyone - barring Teyla - was fairly obviously treating him like the enemy?). It was all a big Wraithish con most likely and he didn't mean any of it, but the scene when Michael mindfucks her? Those words like "understand" and "compassion" coming out in Wraith-voice... just the whole scene? Creepy and shamefully sexy and... Uhn. I wouldn't blame Teyla if she wasn't completely faking it with him, barring the whole not-really-human / genocided-my-people-for-millenia thing. If they do bring Michael back... hey, easy way to explore the Wraith side of her genetics. I do concur with the many earlier specs/reviews and the Wraith DNA is partly what made Michael recognize her, not just because she was on the team that captured him. There is a connection there, gorramit. Even if Michael is full on Wraith and EVOL again (just now with a really good reason to hate humans)... but... CONNECTION! Since I'm on a roll with the straw-grasping... the double dream fake-out also seemed a little too closely resemblant of Teyla's (and her identity questioning) back in The Gift. I can't be the only one who noticed it, someone else spoiled has to have.
Sweet, but oh so unethical Carson:
My heart did break for Carson in this ep, as (painfully sweet) unethical bastard he was... and it's so painful because he's so sweet and empathic and sensitive. He is a mad scientist... but such an endearing one. A woobie Mengele. The paradox is insane. Paul McGillion is also brilliant and he's so underused.
The Retrovirus' Future:
Although since I seriously doubt that Wraith retrovirus is going anywhere... it seems to me it would only be vaguely acceptable (yeah, it's pushing it) if there was a real choice (one of the detriments of the Wraith's relations with humans, but also what made the Atlanteans experiments on Michael so damn unethical... utter lack of choice. Of course, they're both trying to survive aren't they? Which still makes me wonder if Teyla even realized she was both pointing out the similarity in "Allies" while at the same time denying Wraith/Humans had anything in common). If a Wraith volunteered to be turned into a human. Possibly in fear of death (could be something to a parallel to Ancients ascending here, since I've been increasingly dubious of the Ancients' benevolence and their purposes behind ascending. Enlightenment or simple fear of death? Not just because of those Vala's Ori daughter SG1 S10 spoilers either, since yeah... half Ori and half thief-former-Goa'uld? Can't really be trusted... BUT it seems like the seeds are definitely being planted to question the Ancients' intentions, despite the source. I mean, even the chance of Evil Ancients? That's just frightening/intriguing.). Maybe some fatal incident, allergy or poisoning - not inflicted by the Atlantean team, possibly some naturally occuring fluke thing - that only effects Wraith or the Wraith offered the choice and the only option to prolong life was to turn into a human (since humans are immune to whatever the ailment). The Wraith would also likely have to remember being a Wraith (not just because of the moral issue, but probably offer more drama/intrigue too. A Wraith that remembers being a Wraith but is a Wraith no more... disgracedly living with it's food source. AND it would piss Ronon off all sorts of ways. FUBAR, that is). Granted, it's jumping through all kinds of hoops (dangerous firey and potentially everso contrived hoops at that).
Potential for this speculated (De)Wraith(ed) Character:
However, I could imagine the writers have been almost itching for an excuse to create a regular/recurring Wraith character, at least more than one. The possibility of a permanent deWraithified human living on Atlantis with all those nifty Wraithy gifts (namely the telepathy stuff, a la Michael at the end of the ep)? Someone who has a real knowledge of all things Wraith, but also the whole cold, meglomania persona that's all but rendered somewhat ineffectual because of deWraithification. Something like Six (or, huh, RONON! Those Wraith / Ronon parallels seem pretty heavy handed to me. Makes sense though... in order to fight something for as long as he did and survive, one would have to become the enemy to an extent... and seven years is an awful long time. Hell, Michael's sparring session even resembled Ronon's first with Teyla just a tad too closely, right up to the one-armed body slam thing), but more of a team player (allbeit a really reluctant one).
The philisophical conundrum (and Michael's next moves):
The above would also broach all those everso philosophical questions (as in "Michael").... what does it mean to be (or what's so great about being) human? To be Wraith? Was Michael right what he said in "Allies" ("You're more like us than you allow yourselves to believe")? What is the human relationship with the Ancients? The Wraiths'? Blah di blah di blah. I mean, couldn't the Wraith essentially be like the evil vampiric alien very distant brethren of the PegaHumans? Both were basically brought about due to the Ancients... both were abandoned by them to fend for themselves in the Pegasus Galaxy. Like negligent parents abandoning their children almost. While spamming poor
derry667's "Allies" review here, I had several thoughts on Michael's possible intentions regarding Teyla (and brethren) in "Allies". Basically thoughts on the line of bringing Teyla over, for whatever the reasons (maybe for meglomania, maybe for revenge on / complete victory over the Atlanteans... maybe for a new hunger? And as we know, Wraith definitely don't settle for being hungry for too long).
Ronon needs therapy... or get laid. A lot.:
Ronon is going to have to deal with the mass amounts of Wraith-rage of his. He's not going to get any from Teyla at this rate (Weir on the other hand? Dude. Ronon/Liz? Soooo going to Kirk. Don't care about the ShWeir, CaldWeir or the Teynon vibes. Mark my words. LizRo Kirking in S3 or S4. Kirking might do something to dissuade that omnipresent feral anger somewhat [redirect that ferality to other venues]... or at least distract him from it. He hasn't gotten any for presumedly SEVEN YEARS. A man like him? No wonder he's so damn grumpy) Ronon needs to see Heightmeyer... not that that would do any good. 1) Because Ronon definitely doesn't seem the type to go for the whole head-shrinking shit. No matter the orders. 2) Heightmeyer also seems be to suffering from her brain / ethics being missing (but than that's been going around Atlantis for awhile).
Wraith-Kirking (Yeah, I said it!)... and of course it involves Shep:
Of course the deWraithified Wraith would also have to be female (IF Michael decides not to be the new edition which is probably a fairly safe bet). God forbid Shep misses out on the potential for more Kirking (since the writers seem hellbent on teasing the McShep for.ever.). Former Wraith or not, there would be Kirk-swerve. It's inevitable.
Yeah... BSG... Cylon Village was fun (Who is Number One? You are Caprica!Six or so would say HalluciGaius). All the duplicates wandering around... all kinds of creepy and dystopic. Since I rambled FAR too long above (SGA has eaten my SOUL damn it!), I'll try to go for brevity here. Huh. So the connection goes both ways? That's fucking awesome. And Xena is TEH EVOL I say!! E.V.O.L. I'm utterly spoiled, but next week's preview made me all the more giddy.

Date: 2006-02-25 03:32 pm (UTC)cause yeah, that's the way my brain thinks.

I did spend half the time I watched that episode wondering about that, till they finally revealed it. then I was like, HA! I Knew it!

Yeah. can we watch???

Date: 2006-02-25 06:10 pm (UTC)If you don't mind, would you extrapolate more on what invoked the "EEEEE!!!", "Pretty!!!!" and "NO!!!!!!"? Inquiring minds would most definitely like to know. ;)
I did spend half the time I watched that episode wondering about that, till they finally revealed it. then I was like, HA! I Knew it!
And the shipper in the back of my mind was squeeing, "OMG! There liek soulmates of TEH EVOL!!!" Nope, I have no shame.
Yeah. can we watch???
I hope we get to at least peak in the window! SGA isn't so much the libertine a la BSG with the cushy Red Light District timeslot, but ... Shep can't be the only one Kirking in this show god damn it! Sure he Kirks enough probably for the whole damn cast... but, it's just. not. fair. JF is his own brand of walking sex and I'm not complaining perse, but they can't cast a man like Jason Momoa swinging around that Satedan hand cannon and not give us something.
