Dec. 27th, 2005 02:21 pmLooks like I wasn't the only one who got inspiration to give the show another (or their first) shot....
I must have gone to about 10 different stores... couldn't find Firefly in a single. one. of. them. All of which were on order for more copies to come within the week. Undoubtedly, no one would probably have a lot of stock for DVDs that have been out for two (almost three) years, but sauntering into Barnes & Noble, they said they got up to a half dozen requests for it in the morning. It seems to me they might have anticipated the surge in popularity c/o Serenity's DVD release... or not. I realize the show never did all that well, but I still am kind of surprised on how (undeservedly, imho) very poorly it did in the box office. Maybe it's wrong of me not being a "browncoat" and not being in the cusp of that fandom, but... the box office numbers do almost astound me. While in comparison, the Fantastic Four did about five times as well. Maybe it's just momentary naivete and my cynicism regards to the Hollywood sausage factory will kick-in sometime later, but... that kind of does appall me just a little. There were certainly some pretties in FF and I'm definitely not abject to the occassional (very) guilty pleasure (hell, I have Hornblower on vid and dvd), but I'm not going to kid myself in convincing anyone FF was anything but god awful (it so was). I'd say Serenity was easily the vastly better movie,
That heart-in-your-throat moment with Serenity flying through Reaver territory (with the women screaming in agony through the comm... GOD!).
"Tell me that part again about Jayne getting beat-up by a 90 lbs. girl... because that never gets old." (*sighs* I didn't know these characters well, but it didn't take much to like Wash).
The double entendre dialogue between Zoe and Mal at the end, about "being pretty banged up, but she'll fly true" (referring to the grieving widow as well as the ship).
Every scene with The Operative ("This is a good death"....awesome villain), particularly The Operative watching the Miranda archive still, silent and with tears in his eyes (perfect world, indeed).
The gratuitous bad-assitude of River was somewhat choking at times, but definitely wasn't in the realms of - let's say - Michelle Rodriguez levels of forced (yes I'm a bitter "Lost" fan, why do you ask?)
The palpable absolution of sexual frustration in the engine room. We heard about Kaylee's frustration - to the Captain's duress ("GOD! I so don't need to hear that!!" heee) - but I'd wonder how much more sexually frustrated Simon had been. All these hot women around him: one is very spoken for, one he can't afford (and, pretty much, spoken for), one's his sister and the one who is more than available he can't seem to talk to without a massive on-set of foot-in-mouth disease. If Kaylee had problems, I can't imagine they came anywhere near what Simon was suffering (in silence). When was the last time he had anything resembling sex? Even in my brief knowledge I have of the character, he seemed wound tighter than a Sumo's g-string.
The whole Reaver showdown at the end.
Mal haggling with the hapless guard on the more acceptable surrender.
Mal and Inara stammering on the comm.
Not so much the preacher's death (I think that's one instance watching the show probably would have helped in regards to emotional pay-off), but Mal's reaction to it and the threatening to shoot anyone for insubordination later on. GAH! I can't believe how much I'm fangirling over characters I'd been very muchso less than lukewarm over all but a few days ago! It looks like the show never really got it's due when it was on (included those who are now jumping so very, very late on the bandwagon - I almost feel guilty for not watching it in the theater now in attempt to boost those sorry numbers), I suppose not much is going to change despite a damn decent movie. *sighs*
btw, also saw King Kong recently. Eh. It was alright. Adrian Brody's pretty/fugly never fails to bewilder me.

Date: 2005-12-27 10:10 pm (UTC)Hm, I got the series *coughs* in .avi before I got it legally. So, if you really can´t wait, I could upload it. Or you could join one of the share episodes communities:)

Date: 2005-12-28 01:06 am (UTC)Thanks for the offer ;) However, I should be getting it within the next two days... and my HD is also kind of pushing max capacity at the moment. My bro decided to visit and made my comp the giant dumping bin for... stuff.

Date: 2005-12-27 10:21 pm (UTC)Holy shit, i sat here for like, five minutes thinking "....you thought Firefly the series was god awful??" and being very confused and saddened. DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THAT!

Date: 2005-12-28 01:25 am (UTC)heee Although I'd probably have been the scared one if I seriously said "Firefly" is god awful openly on the internets. From what I hear about some branches of the browncoats? Certainly not one to malign any bordering-scary fandom obsession ("Lost" hit me like a plummeting 747). But... yeah.... wouldn't have said that openly. Quite thankfully, I don't think "Firefly" is god awful ("Fantastic Four" on the other hand? ::facepalms::). I could just never latch onto "Firefly" for some reason, but I was thinking that if I watched the whole series... maybe I'd finally get it.

Date: 2006-01-09 07:16 pm (UTC)Okay, I saw Fantastic Four and I found it fairly entertaining, though there was much that there was bad about it, but I liked it more than the rest of the world. However, Serenity is indeed light years better. Anyway, was going to say that it isn't a fair comparison - FF was a kid friendly movie based on a much more widely known source. Plus, it had Alba and whether she deserves it or not, last year was a huge year for her. Joss himself has admitted that Serenity is a hard movie to pitch - off the internets, in the non-virtual world, I try to do so and it's hard to sell sci fi/Western/smart/thrilling/the guy who wrote Buffy. It got good press. It seems to be getting good word of mouth - people who went to see it have gone out to buy the series DVD.
I came to Firefly through repeats, and I've found that the main attitude is 'yes, you like the show' welcoming enthusiasm rather than finger-wagging at not finding it sooner.

Date: 2006-01-12 02:25 am (UTC)Ha! I wish I could say the same about some friends here... who I kind of haven't told yet I've not only seen the BDM, but bought the damn series DVDs. Oh, how they love to gloat with their "I told you so's"... which I suppose they deserve considering how great the show is and how resistant I was for the longest time, but right now I'm going to see how long I can hide my new-found browncoat status.
