better late than never
Dec. 23rd, 2005 06:03 pmThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
I liked it. Amongst some of my other friends, I'd have to agree the kids are better actors the first time around than the HP kids were. Only because I'm a total sucker for those I'll stand with you to the end, my liege sorts of characters....

And considering how some folks (:cough:Mrs. Robinsons:cough:) on my FL react to young Mr. Potter, I have to assume this kid probably got some reactions as well...

The kid playing Lucy was also adorable. I was expecting her to absolutely annoy me, as so many actors her age do, but I thought she did well.
Although I initially questioned Leto II cast as Mr. Tumnus, pretty pretty James McAvoy was surprisingly decent. Although I still always pictured him older and more fidgety.... a la Carroll's poor, nervous White Rabbit, but with hooves.
Although I'm amused all the eye-candy in this was very illegal and/or of the wrong species. Thank you C.S. Lewis. Thank you so much. [/sarcasm] Disturbing dreams for me tonight.
Serenity
I readily admit I was never much into Firefly. I think I've probably seen about five eps in their entirety. For some reason or another, I just could never latch onto the show. Despite seemingly everyone I know obssessed with it (then again, I was never a big BTVS fan either). However... I enjoyed Serenity. A lot. So much so I ran out to Target and bought it. Not to mention...
That scene with Kaylee at the end? HOT. Even if I was a bit confused (I thought he was gay?). No matter. Why did no one tell me? Then again, I suppose everyone was saying it, I just wasn't paying attention. I actually enjoyed the movie enough, I'm going to give Firefly another shot. I believe I read recently (on someone's LJ?) Whedon debunked EW rumors that Firefly (and/or the movies) was (were) finished. I really hope that's true. I'd definitely like to see another Serenity. Even if he was tehEVOL. My brother referred to him as (I'd say, sexier) Wayne Brady possessed by Scorpius with a dash of Crouching Tiger. I don't think he was wrong.

Aslan has Liam Neeson's nose, and that made me laugh. A lot.
Oh, and Serenity is fabulous. My husband's getting it for Christmas, yay!
Merry Christmas, dearie!

Date: 2005-12-27 09:56 pm (UTC)Dude. Have you seen Sci-Fi's Children of Dune (http://www.scifi.com/dune/)? If you thought Tumnus was pretty in TLTW&TW.... the God Emperor pretty is unrelenting (http://www.scifi.com/dune/images_desktops/cod_12_800x600.jpg).
Not to mention being a good actor and all. I knew he was pretty good after the "Dune" movie, but.... he's really good. I really felt the creepy (yet subtley reluctant, more reluctant later on of course) kidnapper. Allbeit his Tumnus was younger and a bit less fidgety than I was expecting.

I know! Maybe HP has corrupted me, but I was almost shocked at how good they were. Awesomely good. I seriously won't be able to watch an HP movie the same way again.

I'm almost surprised at myself of how much I actually did love the movie considering how (less than) lukewarm I've always been with the show. However, my level of fangirliness over it all now almost seems hypocritical in a way. I wouldn't say I was resistant to delve into another cultish show with a crazy fandom and everyone who's tried to get me to watch I trust, but... I did watch it myself, it just didn't grab me. Then. I'm going to give it another shot and see what I think of it. All based on the merits of the movie.

Date: 2005-12-28 04:00 pm (UTC)With you on the creepy kidnapper -- but I think the younger age worked in his favor there, to save it from being TOO creepy. I think it also makes the Tumnus/Lucy friendship more believable, because in some ways Lucy seems older than Tumnus. The two just worked amazingly together, didn't they? I love actors with chemistry. Just so fun to watch.
Regarding Serenity/Firefly...Do you dig Inara? She doesn't do it for me. I think Mal has chemistry with every other female in the cast, but I can't stand to watch him with her. I can't exactly pinpoint why, though.

Date: 2005-12-28 05:20 pm (UTC)Agree about Lucy seeming more mature than Tumnus in ways (random, but loved how she all-too-eagerly pulled out that dagger raring to join the battle. LOL!). They were great. When Lucy saw him in stone just broke my heart. I also love really good friendship chemistry too, which, imo, is actually more rare than decent sexual chemistry. Maybe because - more often then not - Hollywood is just not inclined to keep things "just friends". However, in this case, they had to keep it just friends... and thank GOD for that. There were tiny fears echoing in the back of my mind when I first heard Narnia was going to be big screen adapted that they'd try to make the kids older (and angsty, angsty teenagers) or some horrifying bs. Fatalistic? Probably, but I've been burned too many times by adaptations to keep from the terrible scenarios flying by my brain.

Since I really only have the movie for reference (not counting the smackeral of exposure I have of the show), I dig her. I think there was some time you and I had to disagree on something, looks like this is it. ;) I'm kind of surprised how little problem I have with all the (from what I can tell) canon pairings. There's always just one or two that either don't do anything for me or I just flat-out don't like. Maybe when I finally watch the show in it's entirety (getting the DVDs tomorrow! YAY!), I'll be singing a different tune... but right now, I'm kosher with them all. ;)

Date: 2005-12-28 11:06 pm (UTC)We got Serenity for Christmas. Maybe in re-watching it (and we're re-watching the series, too) I'll be less against Inara. I think with me it's just the other women interest me more, and I don't like Mal having a thing for the woman I don't care about. ; )

Date: 2005-12-31 04:20 pm (UTC)There's this scene in the script I really wish Joss hadn't cut (extended Director's Edition perhaps? ::begs:: ), where Inara really breaks down after watching the Miranda archive. Then again, it may have done nothing to sway you (it was also a Mal/Inara scene). ;)

Date: 2006-01-09 07:04 pm (UTC)I am hoping for amazing DVD sales to give us more Firefly/Serenity, but I think they'd have to be amazing.
