Lost 2.03 - Orientation

Did Mr. Mysterious Philanthropist Who Funded Dharma's Projects Who Was Standing Mysteriously in Window look a hell of a lot like William B. Davis (aka, Cigarette-Smoking Man from The X-Files) to anyone? Or was that just me?

BTW... a "zoological experiment" can eat Ana Lucia. Anytime now. kthnxbye I was very compelled to hand toothpicks through the tv screen... wouldn't want to get too much scene caught in her teeth. Although "Shaft" can stay. He's one scary looking hombre (hopefully he'll actually get to talk next week).

I also love how "Lost" is continuing showing the warm and fuzzy side of parenting. First Susan last week, now it's Pappy!Locke. Of course, we already knew both were incredible jerks, but wow. Although that OCD behavior Locke was exhibiting was just painful to watch. Persistently driving by his Pappy's house, even after that everso kind brush off? God damn. If I didn't think PriorIsland!Locke's life was "Welcome to the Dollhouse" before? Also, Emmy people, you are all enormous fuckwits... but we all knew this. Although it was nice seeing Locke with a real woman and not some imaginary phone sex one (both named Helen? I assume the phone sex girl just let him call her "Helen", whether that was her name or not. Are all Locke's love intersests - real or illusory - named "Helen"? Didn't he accidentally call Kate "Helen" in Walkabout...? *eg*).

Right now, my spec of the moment is Locke/Helen getting in a terrible car accident (they seem to be somewhat prevalent in this show) and that is how Locke became paralyzed... Helen, unfortunately, died.

Naveen is also a great actor .... but too bad the extent of his lines seemed to be "Follow the conduits!". Riveting. He did look everso pretty yelling it though! Yay! Why hasn't Shannon gotten his shirt off yet?

Random observances prior rewatching.... aside from the crazy amounts of Silent Hill feeling I was getting from that short film (and the potential Cigarette Smoking Man appearance mentioned above??).... that researcher of the long blonde hair looked strikingly like Shannon. Of course, that might mean nothing... a lot of folks think the Molotov-Cocktail-throwing lady pirate-kidnapper from Exodus looked like Shannon too. For someone so 'useless', she certainly gets around? Heh. However, I have considered the Firestarter scenario quite profusely with this show (the Lostaways are or were all part of some global genetic experimenting... the Lostaways are the end results). Wouldn't put it passed an apparent researcher to research on her/his/their own children.

Also, Jack, I know you're in apparently deep denial and/or traumatised from your stadium hoyay buddy showing up in a bunker on Mystery Frickin' Island... but shut the hell up. Just... seriously. Otherwise I'm going to start wishing a "zoological experiment" eats you along with your not!girlfriend currently keeping Sawyer company.

Mental notes: Pick up Turn of the Screw at B&N tomorrow.

In propagating my ridiculous "Lost" obsession... I'm reading The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien thanks to the spoilers that said the novel would prominently feature in this ep. Interesting novel. If it's ever made into a movie Terry Gilliam should definitely direct it. Although it's going to take some more pondering before I start finding the Lostian clues that are supposedly there. Outside of some bicycle fascination and/or possible alternate dimensions (which could certainly be a tie-in from last season as well with L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time cameo). I suppose we'll have to see.

And let me join in the incredulity alongside empressov... Jin speaking English? Outside of some fake-out scenario (which I WOULD NOT put past the writers), like a hallucination or whatnot... I suppose secrets are safe with *some* folks on the island? God damn. Also looks like Charlie is going to piss me off (again) next week. A lot.

And you know between the flirtation at the airport bar and now this slap-happy flirtation with Sawyer... we're going to be drowning in geometric debacles. Jebus help us.

I think this would be a glorious opportunity for Locke to up his "Colonel Kurtz" points, take that machete of his and slice & dice some obnoxious, superfluous bad-ass. For the extra crazy flavor, cook up some soylent greens or something. Then feeds them to Jack, Sawyer and Kate in a nice candlelight supper in the hatch in attempt to "bury the hatchet".

I'm hoping MR's black hole of suck isn't powerful enough to implode "Lost", but ... this show has taught me to never say never.

I'd seriously read that fic. I kid you not. Locke going all Titus Andronicus and feeding the bastard child of the writers to the other bastard children (apart from Sawyer who seems the only aghast one in my mind's eye). Jack channelling Heston to obscene degrees. It's all very (horrifyingly) clear.

The lotion in the basket scene has got to be the most frightening thing I have ever seen in a movie. My skin just crawls even thinking about it. Hannibal doesn't frighten me nearly as much.

Back to the episode, I thought it was such a huge improvement from last week. My husband and I both growled when we had to see the Jack-Desmond-Locke bit yet again...And I had issues with the clunky expository (and repetive) dialogue between Jack and Locke before watching the Dharma film...And also with Michael crying "It's a girl!" when they saw AL's face. As if the BOOBS weren't a clue...

But other than that, it felt a little more like the show that hooked me last season.
