This is more randomness, but I discovered today that San Diego and Tijuana are considering a joint bid for the 2016 Olympic games.

Am I the only one that thinks this is one of the worst. ideas. ever?

Undoubtedly, the American / Mexican olympic committees would try to take the opportunity and gouge the US / Mexican gov'ts for funding to clean up TJ (if they started now they might just finish by 2016, although I'm probably being generous), but I can't even imagine the amount of red tape that they'd have to go through to even begin considering something like this. Dual nation Olympics? Have any of these folks ever actually been to Tijuana? Frankly, I think someone is smoking the good shit. TJ: The Olympic city.... Hell? It shall freeze over.

How could it possible to do a dual-nation olympics, hasn't it always been the tradition to showcase the host nation, hence bringing in the crowds and making the city internationally known after the games?

It can be done I suppose, it would be a novel idea if it could work. Although it probably would work a lot better if the countries were Norway/Sweden or something. Neighboring countries whose relations are a lot more comfortable then those between the US and Mexico.

San Diego and TJ are practically like one city... but I'm sure any Mexican you ask out there probably wouldn't want Tijuana representing their country. Monterrey or Chihuahua (close to the border, but not border cities) would be better, but not TJ. Ever.

The issue most critical to San Diego's possible bid is where the International Olympic Committee decides to hold the 2012 Summer Olympics [...]. If the Games go to New York [...] it's unlikely they would be awarded to another U.S. city in 2016.

I mean, seriously. The thing that popped into my mind, is the crossing of the border, back and forth. They mentioned that as if it's just one detail they'd have to deal with. I know I'm from a whole 'nother border city, but... have they even *seen* the lines to cross the borders, even in a regular weekday?

Jesus, I know. It boggles trying to imagine the Olympics influx of tourists, added on to the folks already TJ regulars? A logistical nightmare doesn't even begin to describe it.

They probably have, but they also likely have some farcical idea to try and make the border crossing somehow more convenient or more lenient. Yeah. Not going to happen.

I did share this with some of my other friends over in Morelos and Monterrey. They reacted more or less like you, but insert some snorting and laughter on the side. Could you imagine? TJ representing the entirety of México?

Man, I hadn't even gone there! I guess I only thought, if it's a border city they want, then it actually is the best option. But yeah, Monterrey would be the best option, what with being (relatively) close to the border, and a very nice city (not to mention a city that would actually be ready for something like that). It always goes back to the border problems and red tape issues. Add that to the distance, it's not going to happen, but no doubt Monterrey would be an exceedingly better choice than TJ. Hands down.

Actually, if Austria and Switzerland can manage to host the soccer world championship, then the US and Mexico should manage Olympics. Never underestimate the vile animosities between small and practically powerless countries, yo. We had our own spy affairs, after all!

I don't doubt the desire between the individual countries to host the games again.... but not in Tijuana dude. It's never going to happen.
