retro_eidasheee Ron Perlman amuses me. FHM [Breaks. Sinks a stripe.] So what's it like shooting pool with that giant hand?
Hellboy [Sinks a solid.] It's actually easier. It's a nice stabilizer, kind of a natural bridge. This hand originally had some servo motors in it that would move the fingers while we were shooting. But they've been taken out now.
FHM It's quite a getup. What's the makeup process like?
HB Well, a typical shooting day was 12 to 14 hours, plus the makeup-four hours to get it on, one to take it off. So it could go as long as an 18-hour day. [Sinks two more solids.] Eating and drinking were tough. It's not like the red was really going to come off my hands, but they didn't want to take any chances with me handling foreign objects. The production assistants would hold out water bottles with giant straws to sip out of.
FHM That's a long day. Sleep much?
HB It's amazing how much adrenaline can take you through these things. Five-minute naps go a long way. [Continues sinking the damn balls.]
FHM You also played the Beast on the TV show Beauty and the Beast. Chicks dug that show in a very intense way. Do you have any weird groupie stories?
HB There was, uh, a great deal of enthusiasm for that show and a great number of people dedicated to it. There are people who still gather three or four times a year to celebrate my character. It boggles the mind.
FHM Get any good stalkers?
HB I'd rather not comment on stalkers. That's a game that doesn't need any more encouragement. It's kinda scary as is.
FHM [Ties the game at five balls each.] So what's with all those accessories?
HB When fighting monsters, you never know what you're going to need. I've got a cross, a horseshoe, garlic. . . .
FHM You got a stake in there?
HB I haven't had a steak since the mad-cow scare.
FHM There's that deadpan Hellboy wit, eh?
HB Yeah. I've become a real fan of the material. Once it was green-lit, I steeped myself in the comic book. I waited until it was official because the last thing I wanted to do was read it, fall in love with it and then have Vin Diesel get it. [Tapping cigar] Hey, light me. I'm out.
FHM Are you a big stogie smoker?
HB Yes. This is a Hoyo de Monterrey.
FHM They pricey?
HB Depends. The Cubans are very expensive, but the ones from the Dominican Republic run you from $5 to $15. [Sinks another shot, moves on to the eight-ball.]
FHM Cubans? But they're illegal.
HB I was just saying. If I'm in one of the other six continents, someone might come up and offer me a Cuban, just out of appreciation. But I'd have to say, "I can't smoke that. You see, it's frowned upon by the FBI." Eight-ball side pocket. [Sinks it.]
FHM Looks like you win.
HB Easy pickins. Loser buys the beer.
Hellboy hits theaters April 2.

Have y'all seen the new TV spot? I was flipping through the channels about an hour or so ago and caught a new one on MTV. There was this very squee moment at the end when HB is rearing back and has this snarly look on his face. HB might not be lickalicious a la Hugh's VH, but HB is working the cool all over the place.
