spn - 5.17 - 99 problems

• Wow. Dean's certainly giving Theo Faran a run for his money in the utterly depressed, apathetic savior department.
  
  
• Crazy cult/fundie ep, it's about damn time.
  
  
• O HAI Daniel Jackson! Too bad you hardly did anything in this ep. You did save Dean & Sam once!
  
  
• Though I've noticed - if season 6 does go all post-apocalyptic - Dean and Sam have garnered themselves a nice little band of resistance fighters. Father Gideon and Daniel Jackson & wife (as did many of the knowledged, resourceful townsfolk) came out alive at the end of this ep. Rufus is presumably still alive. Chuck grew a pair in 5.09. They've got at least one ally up in Heaven in Ash (and last ep also shows it's possible to communicate with Heaven, even if "the spell is difficult to maintain"). Bring on the post-apocalyptic survival story I say!
  
  
• And damn, I fully concur 22by7, that was Look of Teh Ghey (and in church, no less) between Daniel Jackson and "Paul"
  
  
• Thus the seeds for apathetic, cold-hearted "fearless leader" Dean and pill-popping, boozer Last Man!Cas of 2014 are firmly planted. I feel for Sam and Bobby, they seem to be the last shreds of hope keeping Dean and Cas from completely going off the deep end.
  
  
• Dean and Cas having a moment about how fucked up they both are their deadbeat dads. The last time Dean communed like that with someone, there was sex shortly thereafter. Though they're both guys and this is SPN on American network tv, the closest it comes is Fight Club from the looks of the promo.
  
  
• Yes, random Lisa was random, but I really doubt how much that was about Dean/Lisa (they don't even know each other, really) as much as her and Ben being the personification of the white picket fence dream that we know Dean's had (apparently still has). Him saying goodbye to her was him believing he's finally putting his big man pants on, waking up and letting go of the dream (by saying yes to the illusion-masters, the angels. Not contradictory at all, Deano!). Lisa also functioned, fairly blatantly, as the personification of humanity. Both in the sense of the people Dean wishes will be saved by saying yes ("People, families, that's what's real!") and the face of those he'll kill by saying yes. Adios, (Dean's) humanity!
  
  
• Leah and Lisa. Kripke does love his symmetry, but there have been a lot of female mirrors this season or maybe that's just me. Most of them though are powerful women who have considerable sway over the heroes, for good and evil. I do suspect God is a woman or enthralled by one.

Next week: Cas gets officially adopted into the Winchester clan by showing his love via physical violence.

Also, anyone going to make a Dean/Cas vid to "Life on Mono"?

Hahaha, I thought I was the only one who thought that about Rob and Paul in church... I was thinking "oh, they're going to go there, and then those poor bastards will be the first to be burned, when the crazy starts up."

And Paul kept going on about how the town was basically hypocrites that used to spend all their time in his bar rather than in church and getting some on the side. All I could think is he was speaking from personal experience and then we get that look in the church. It seemed too temptingly coded as Rob/Paul having a little something something while Rob led the faux perfect family life. Then Paul is shot by Rob's wife no less, because Paul is a "sinner" standing in their way of "Paradise". IDEFK LOL

I suspect there will be many vids a day or two after 5.18. Just a hunch. lol But as for music, I had that damn Mono song stuck in my head for hours. *facepalm*

Second point, I thought that scene was terrifying exactly bc of what you said, I felt a lot of people didn't really think it was important to mention that.

I had a long conversation regarding Lisa with amechiro and I have to say the whole 'good bye to my humanity' thing ended up being done imo in a really odd way. It wasn't Lisa that bothered me it was her inviting Dean in to say good bye to her son who clearly felt affection for him. Children are very sensitive and this could have done MAJOR damage. That at the end of the day ended up bothering me the most.

Yeah I'm very excited for next week. I was over at deancastiel, reading the comments for a clip for next week, some people had some very insightful things to say. Clearly I wasn't one of them but yeah I think it was interesting to read. I won't say more in case you didn't watch the clips.

Probably. Though probably none of mine XD I haven't been able to finish vids lately, because with the show airing regularly, I just KNOW I'd get a video done, and then the next week, see a scene that could have been SO perfect, if I had just waited =P

It was pretty anvil-dropping, so I get why people didn't even bother to mention it, but yeah. Not even subtle at all they were hinting at that. Though I wish for a better future, that sick and wrong part of me is hoping this is indicative we do indeed get post-apoc season 6. SPN could rock so hard with a post-apoc season in a way it didn't so much with the apocalypse. I can't even!

Yeah, honestly, if I look at it any other way than pure metaphor it all comes off very WTF. Had I been Lisa I'd have probably maced Dean, much less let him be around her kid. I'm sure she's eternally grateful for Dean saving her son but at the same time he's a guy she hadn't seen in years who she barely knew (as far as we've been shown). He just shows up, dumps all that scary, intense shit on her? I guess I'm just a cold-hearted bastard that way, but yeah, that whole thing came off weird and creepy if not for the blatant metaphors.

And yeah, the moment I was done watching 5.17 I ran to those clips como el alma lleva al diablo. I watched the hell out of them.

I'm still (probably futilely) waiting for the D/C hug. Come on, writers! Dean's hugged every member of his fam, natural or otherwise, BUT Cas! And if ANY times they've been begging for hug action? IT'S RIGHT EFFING NOW! They do seem to be delivering somewhat on the D/C in the back end of this season, so yeah, probably best you're holding off on vidding just yet until some really big D/C bromance scores (if Kripke isn't a rat bastard and doesn't cheat us out of them). lol

I like Mono and don't mind that song getting stuck in my head really, but DAMN that song was overplayed back in the 90s.

Post-apocalypse can also be reverting back to simpler times and more quiet moments like fishing by a lake or whatev (because there's fuck all to do anymore! lol). Post-apoc may also explain why the Winchester Gospel comes into being. The Winchester fame going beyond them starting Armageddon, but the ones who were at the forefront of pulling the world out of hell.

That and the way I see it, it's like introducing Godzilla in the first act. You sort of expect him to destroy Tokyo. This is sort of how I feel with Lucifer, ditto Michael. I'm actually going to be sort of disappointed if the Earth doesn't get a real thrashing.

CDub actually got off their lazy asses and cooked up a new promo for it being the 100th ep. Color me shocked as hell!

It totally is. In fact there was a comment!fic the morning before the clip was released that featured the line "I gave everything for you"... I just about died when that was actually in the clip XD.

Well, show is all about it's balance/symmetry... There should be a hug at the end, after Dean comes to his senses, and realizes that Cas stopped him from doing something really stupid. Barring that, we should get a meaningful conversation, and long, soulful looks...

People didn't like the Lisa thing?! I loved the Lisa thing, though, as you said, I didn't read so much into it. I pretty much agree that it was more about what Lisa represented, than Lisa herself. Which is why her reaction to seeing him, which normally might seem a little strange, didn't really bother me. Because it really wasn't about her.

Lisa is quite literally like the Beatrice to Dean's Dante. It's all very idealized and romanticized, while also being sad and creepy since Dean doesn't really know Lisa (though at least Dean knew Lisa better than Dante knew Beatrice). Though Beatrice (or the idea of her / that ideal of love of her), like potentially Lisa for Dean, came to represent something else for Dante than just literal romance. I obvs really don't want to see Dean end up like Dante at all, waxing poetic forever about a dream life and love he believes he can never have and never quite able to move on from. Treating the woman he did end up marrying practically like second best to The Ideal (either of the idyllic dream!Lisa or Dean's notions about what he believed his rel'p with Sam was). Always chasing after windmills and never seeing what's in front of him.

Though ironically Dean likely thinks he's facing up to reality by saying yes to Michael. His eyes will probably be opened to the fallacy of that right quick and probably painfully too. Though perhaps not quite painful to him (barring certain bloody incidents in spoiler clips), but for those he loves. To get Dean to really react? It's ultimately no use hurting HIM. He was in Hell for 40 years, so getting him to react or convince him via his own pain is futility. To get Dean to react? Hurt those he cares about.

Though Cas will probably figure out quickly - barring his all too human (and Winchester) reaction to anger and frustration at Dean - hurting Dean himself won't get Dean to change his mind. Hurting those he cares about though? I don't necessarily think Cas has any presumptions about what he thinks Dean feels for him and thus wouldn't act based on that, but I do think Cas will do something to himself that he believes will make Dean, very literally, incapable of saying yes to Michael (maybe he makes a deal with Lucifer, IDK). However, it will be when Dean finds out about what Cas did and why, it will be a contributing factor to get Dean to have a turn around. Dean's likely, and currently unsuspected by Cas, emotional reaction to a friend's sacrifice will be what changes Dean's mind. More than any physical beating could and possibly more than whatever Cas actually might have done.

I can't figure out what this "sacrifice" is that Cas is supposed to make. Everything I consider seems to defeat the purpose. I'll be really interested to see what he does. Hopefully it won't be a big disappointment.
