...And Castiel's heart will be broken.

Seriously, angels and selective breeding? Between that and Michael's determinism BS, amongst other things, angel society is seriously Orwellian. I just haven't seen or read many dystopia stories where the Father/God/Emperor/Lord President or whatever sort of leader figure that was an ok sort of person... or they're totally impotent figureheads and some asshole, trumped-up underling is actually running the show. Castiel's heart is so going to be broken when he meets Daddy. He probably will be just like adult John - who doesn't call when his kids practically beg him for help or they get electrocuted (with Armageddon) - but a bigger heartless bastard. The big cold chessmaster (not) in the sky.... or perhaps off pretending to be the ideal family man with his own Adam while the whole of Earth & Heaven can go frak off?

Even not considering the whole dystopia motife of angels, SPN tends not to make it's heroes happy anyway, even (or especially) in it's endings. Oh Cas, the writers are going to make you cry yet.

ETA. Thinking about Dune, but another God option is he could be pulling a Leto II. As in God let the whole Armageddon situation happen (or instigated it himself) as means to eventually and purposefully collapse Heaven, or at least it's ruling angel body. Wanting to give the angels the same freedom (free will) he did humanity and live to make their own mistakes & triumphs, but also unfortunately already knowing the outcome for most of them via this gift. A la Leto II, possibly realizing early on that the situation in Heaven couldn't be sustained, so it has to be destroyed to be rebuilt. He left (for Earth), leaving the angels to fend for themselves, knowing things would go Lord of the Flies. So, the angel children implode in on themselves when the leaders of the angelic frater familias, Lucifer and Michael, destroy each other, while the human family remains (Dean, Sam and possibly Castiel adopted into it and any other angels who fight with them). Just as God intended it.

Yeah, I'm with you there. Better and smarter people than Kripke haved tried to take on theodicy and failed. There's not much difference between angels and demons, is there? The angels are kinda worse, they meddle a lot more. At least with demon deals, there's a choice. Not much of one, perhaps, but it's there. In my mind, 'Heaven' is full of delusional psychopaths. God never existed. Perhaps belief in God and angels fell off in the 20th century, and once they weren't nourished by that anymore, they sorta woke up, and decided to go to Earth and meddle around and make things fit into their collective delusion.

Ya know, I think I'd like this storyline better if it was sci-fi, and angels and demons were two species of aliens fighting it out. Hmmm, that sounds vaguely familiar, perhaps it's been done already.

I'd imagine God will either be an asshole, ineffectual or refuse to help all to tighten the ranks, so to speak. Probably not unlike how Sam chose Dean over John in "Devil's Trap" (wise choice since John turned out to be possessed), then Cas will probably be faced with a similar choice (tho more up in the air which side he'd choose). The situation would be set-up exactly so Dean, Sam and Cas are going to be the only ones they can depend on in the end. Not really a crazy bet considering that's pretty much what's happening now (tho Bobby still has their backs, for now anyway).

I can imagine God probably does exist, if only because that's the more angsty option. Wondering where the hell he's been all this time.

Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Blizzard's whole line-up (tho only one of their big three is sci-fi). Then talking sci-fi/spec fic, don't even get me started on all the dystopia stories out there. Then, of course, there's Star Wars, which SPN is all too similar (they're both Campbellian stories and Kripke's made no secret about being a huge Campbell fanboy).

Heaven is the Empire and it's inevitably going to fall and the Emperor will turn out to be either Lucifer or God Himself. Though Lucifer (and/or Michael) strike more as Vader types.

'God is going to suck, and Castiel's heart will be broken.'
Oh yes. Poor Cas. D: It's going to be like when Dean found out that John gave Adam the kind of life Dean (oh, the look on his face when he found out about the baseball games) always wanted but worse.

It will probably be leading to bonding and camaraderie, but if Castiel needs to get some mantears quota in before the season is over (or any such bonding), this will probably do it.

Though I'm probably in this God Will Be An Asshole funk, and reminded of John, lately because Dean crying for help Heavenward in the last ep reminded me way too much of Dean in "Home" on the phone to John, in tears, also begging for help. Help that never came.

So true. I just hope he finally gets a hug.
