I just came back from ROTK
Dec. 18th, 2003 01:17 amI have zero confidence in my ability to form completely coherent thoughts at the moment, so this will all be exhausted gushing with no real structure. I will say that I could spend the rest of my young life making collages, wallpaper or whatever piece of expression within my capacity in homage to LOTR until I crash Photoshop a hundred times ... but I'd never, ever do the feelings I have churning now any kind of justice. I know this, without a doubt, after watching ROTK tonight.
Sean Astin deserves an Oscar. "I can't carry it, but I can carry you." Weighing that against the emotional barrage you were already subjected to until that point... and to still come away as one of the most significantly emotional scenes in the film? Something that forced into your very core and *made* you feel for these two characters? Even if you'd think at that point you didn't have it left in you to be anymore attached? It pulls you in even deeper... and so near the end. It's perfection folks. Give. him. an. Oscar.
Oscar belongs to Peter Jackson. Even if he doesn't win it.
The Annie Lennox song, although at first I'd agree with many that it felt *one of these things is not like the other one* put up next to Enya and Emiliana Torrini... put in the context of the movie (the end credits), the song works. It will probably win an Oscar. Due to it being sung by Annie Lennox, much more in the realms of the general listening populace then Enya or Torrini, also will probably be heard / seen on national radio stations, MTV, Much Music, VH1, etc. You'll be sitting there minding your own business... when suddenly a 3 minute piece of cinematic brilliance unfolds itself and it all comes rushing back. For this, Annie Lennox is an aberration I welcome.
I knew Theoden's fate, anyone who read the books knows it... but I cried anyway. Not all that surprising, but I also was on the verge of sobbing during the "Do not despair" moment with Eowyn. Only to know what happens to him on the fields of Pelennor. Really glad I brought kleenex at that point.
Eomer standing down the Oliphaunt and spearing the Easterling just about made my ovaries explode.
Legolas? His Oliphaunt stand-down was also twitching at the ovaries of course, but then just when I thought they couldn't take anymore brutality ... one of my secret wishes is fulfilled to see him in his full princely regalia at the end of the movie. **kaboom** I will no longer be able to have children, but it was worth all the delicious agony. The return of the silver Lorien shirt *and* he also wears a crown (which looked more like a tiara, but it went so well with the shirt). Also loved his reaction went Aragornessar was getting bitchslapped by the giant uruk. Slashtastic.
Final randomness before I collapse...
The "Guardian of the Citadel" stabbing the uruk and saving Gandalf.
Gandalf running off the fellbeasts (Pippin still by his side).
The look of terror on Faramir's face at the taking of Osgiliath and standing tall on the saddle riding out to meet his death in the name of Gondor.
Frodo actually getting a hit in and punching someone... and it was Gollum.
The machismo yet tender (*only* in these movies. Oy) moment of the King claiming his last long denied rite and sweeping Arwen off her feet. Taking what's his, but also in the grandest display of love yet shown between the two. I only wish we could have seen more of Eowyn and Faramir besides one knowing little glance at the coronation.
Aragorn leaping from the Corsair... with an army of undead Mountain Dew hued warriors behind him. Machismo at it's most delectably dubious. Show them who's King you bad ass son of a bitch sexy mofo you... then he only gets hotter doning the kingly couture. Fatal blow to the future of my offspring right there, Prince Leggy just finished me off.
The honoring of the hobbits... and on that note...
Peter Jackson, friend, you bow to no one.
And now I'm naked in darkness... LOTR is done. For the ROTK EE and the world's ending!!
