I think that's just the thing. The other angels, Sam, Bobby want something specific from Castiel, something for themselves. Sam wants Cas to be the image of the sort of angel he always believed in and Bobby wants Cas to fix him. Whenever Dean asks Cas for something it's not for himself but for someone else or the entire planet. On the other none of them, Dean neither, is very quick with reciprocating Cas' loyalty and sacrifices. Still Cas believes in Dean. (Oh God this sort of rambley, it's like 4 am here) Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that neither Dean nor Castiel need each other but they still seek the other's company. And I'm sure that's something they didn't have before - a friend who wants to be with them just because with no other motives or agendas.
