It took me a bit longer than I thought to get back into the swing of things post-holidays. Here's an info-dump of various fannish updates and a few embarrassing confessions which I'm blaming entirely on relatives and cheap booze.
Your main fandom of the year? Supernatural. Donna Noble was win, but I've been feeling Who burn-out for some months and Chrimbo did nothing to change things. Moff might jump-start things possibly (hopefully as 80% of my flist is from Who, otherwise if I jump ship I won't have any clue what anyone is talking about). SPN has sort of cleansed my Who palette, so I'll be ready for era of Moff when it comes (I'd also doubt any of Moff's general chauvinism will phase me after a four season marathon of SPN). I gotta say though, I never fully realized just how easy I was for some strategically placed Carry On, Wayward Son until I started watching SPN.
Your favourite film watched this year? Let the Right One In. A really good, haunting, minimalist vampire movie that you can rec to people without the threat of them thinking you must be into Anne Rice or Stephenie Meyer or Laurell K. Hamilton. It's honestly like the anti of all those. I'd say it's sort of like the My Girl of vampire movies but without Macauley Culkin randomly dying from a bee-sting (or had he done, he'd been turned into a terrifying Swedish child vampire, so no worries). Also mentions for The Dark Knight, Nocturna, [REC], WALL-E and Slumdog Millionaire
Your favourite book read this year? The Hungry City Chronicles - Philip Reeve (why aren't these being made into movies yet?), Un Lun Dun - China Mieville
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year? The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia, Tindersticks - The Hungry Saw, I Am Kloot - Play Moolah Rouge, The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead, Bitter:Sweet - Drama, The Coral - Roots & Echoes, Fleet Foxes s/t, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights
Your favourite TV show of the year? Supernatural. I'm not even kidding how so damn easy I am for a potentially decent apocalypse story on the tv box. Yes, I'm completely ignoring the last ep and anything to do with Ruby. Also, hot angels & demon hunters and one of the leads is possibly the antichrist! Also honorable mentions to The Middleman, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Battlestar Galactica, The Sarah Jane Adventures and, despite the burn-out, Doctor Who (Donna Noble was really win, but the finale was a bit shite. Again.)
Your favourite LJ community of the year?
spn_castiel. Mmmm hawt sacrilicious angel comm. Throw in
ontd_twatlight for shits & giggles. Oh SMeyer, you make it so easy.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year? *sighs* Should I be honest, allbeit embarrassing, and say Smallville S8? Srsly, it surprised me how not god awful it was. Still pretty sudsy, but I knew that going into it. It's also doing an apocalypse story this season (and yes, that's how it got me), granted almost all metaphorically and ultimately I don't care too much whether not-tween Supes dies or not. I'm just shamefully curious on if Doomy ends up dead emo totty or dead spiky gorilla berserker.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? The Who burn-out. For specifics I'd say the S4 Who finale, but it's almost a bit expected Rusty's finales not being very good/overblown, sad as that is to say. Heroes hasn't been as good as I was hoping it to be, but still decent (it really should be better though)
Your TV boyfriend of the year? Misha Collins' Castiel from SPN, closely followed by Sam Witwer's Doomy McSixPack on SV and the model/voice for Starkiller in The Force Unleashed (Doomsday AND a Sith - basically he pushes all the nerdy buttons, he's hot and isn't atrocious with the acting). Honorable mention to Zachary Quinto's Sylar on "Heroes" (as
mrstater will possibly cut me if I don't mention him), despite the gratuitous character whiplash the show is suffering from, his character is still somewhat decent HAWT (and summer of Sylock 09!!)
Your TV girlfriend of the year? bar none, Natalie Morales' Wendy Watson in The Middleman
Your biggest squee moment of the year? THE BRIG IN SJA! EEEEE!! Do presidential elections count? I was squeeing pretty damn loudly watching MSNBC the evening of Nov. 2. Hell, I'll throw in Keith Olbermann for good measure.
The most missed of your old fandoms? Heroes. Please be better this year.
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? The Song of Ice and Fire, does that have a fandom? I hear the books are quite good and there's a tv series pilot for HBO going to be made, but they're also these doorstop-sized tomes and have no time to commit to them. Not a fandom I'm necessarily unfamiliar with (I've liked the DS9 I've seen and have seen more Voyager than any human being should), but Star Trek might pull me in if the movie is win. It looks like it could be. I also really must watch The Wire one of these days. I probably wouldn't be surprised at myself I dabbled in the Beeb's Merlin series eventually, but it hasn't pulled me in yet.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year? As Moff era Nu Who won't be around until 2010, I'll just hope the Watchmen movie doesn't fiercely suck (depending on if this whole Fox debacle gets sorted out). There are probably many things I'm forgetting, but I like the idea that come February I won't have to pay extra to watch Heroes, TSCC, SPN, SV, BSG or Who in HD.
ICONS (which surprisingly aren't all Who).
HOW MANY ICONS DO YOU HAVE: 86
OUT OF HOW MANY AVAILABLE ICONS SPACES: 121
IF YOU COULD BUY SPACE FOR MORE, WOULD YOU: pfft, don't know what to do with the space I have left
DO YOUR ICONS MAKE A STATEMENT: "i'm a nerd"?
WHAT FANDOM DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: Doctor Who
AND THE SECOND MOST: Supernatural
WHAT SHIP DO YOU HAVE THE MOST ICONS OF: Sam/Dean SPN (which I don't actually ship, not that way anyway)
ARE YOUR ICONS MADE MOSTLY BY OTHER PEOPLE: Yup
DO YOU MAKE ICONS: Occasionally
ARE THEY ANY GOOD: They're ok, in that dull, *too lazy to use textures, filters or fonts* sort of way
ANIMATED ICONS ARE: tedious to make, but kudos to those who have the patience
DO THE MEME.

- I finally got around to watching The Next Doctor yesterday. It reminded me a hell of a lot of K-Pax. Which, despite the lack of floating and glowing and other such religulous shenanigans, did absolutely nothing to dissuade from Rusty's Doctor Is Jesus (Especially On Chrimbo) that's been going on the past few years.
- As for the actual next Doctor, I don't really have much to say. He does nothing for me wading on the shallow end of the pool. However, I hear he's a good actor and I'm in the camp that was ready for a change, so I suppose I'm on the plus side of things for now.
- I probably should have blamed the delayed LJ response on nursing nasty finger callouses c/o profuse amounts of Left 4 Dead, Dead Space and PS3 Bioshock over the holidays. My fingers are still sore. I forgot how cathartic zombie killing can be, if vaguely traumatizing for the dreams it inevitably inspires. I liked Dead Space especially, it was like Event Horizon the game (which is pretty much the ghost/zombie terror version of Solaris). I was also playing a little Little Big Planet which was every bit as painfully cute and painfully addictive as I'd been hearing it was.
- In that vein of traumatizing zombie terror, I'd recommend [REC] which I saw oh so appropriately saw on Christmas Eve. It's basically "Blair Witch Project" (minus motion sickness, or at least I didn't get sick) meets "28 Days Later". I did watch it rather late, so I might be exaggerating with the trauma, but the last 5 minutes? I was hiding behind a pillow through most of it. If it looks familiar, Hollywood remade it with Dexter Morgan's sister. Not surprisingly, I heard the remake wasn't as
traumatizinggood. - By a very unfortunate circumstance (aka, cousins half my age and this is where the cheap booze comes into play), I was conned into watching the recent season of Smallville. A show I haven't watched with any consistency since it's second season and then only barely. I'm rather ashamed to say, I didn't find it half as bad as I remembered it. There are still only about two or three in the cast that can actually act and Doomsday is entirely different than he is in comics canon (as per SV, he's of course emo and HAWT, I've dubbed him Doomy McSixPack), however, it really wasn't atrocious. Which probably will end up getting my nerd-cred card revoked or something.
- Although the SV shame might not have been quite as great had I actually caught up with a fandom I actually take part in as I've missed most of SGA this season. I've also missed Friday's series finale. *sighs*
- Now what's this about some great LJ exodus?
