Berry Returns to 'X-Men' for Bigger Role

Great. Since Storm is like the bestest character in the movies and all.

Halle Berry only agreed to star in the second X-Men sequel after studio bosses agreed to give her a bigger role in the forthcoming movie. The Oscar-winner was reluctant to reprise her role as Storm in X-Men 3 - but producer Lauren Shuler convinced her by boosting her character's involvement. Schuler says, "I love working with her. We would only write a huge role for her, so she's right in that respect. We would make sure that would happen." Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Famke Janssen are also expected to reprise their roles in film, set to begin shooting next year.

The IMDB has a reputation of rampant inaccuracy and that includes the "news" section. They very well could have taken the recent LSD quotes (posted at just about every movie news-site) and put their own special spin on them. Yet, I don't find LSD's perpetual Halle-love very comforting. Wouldn't put it past her or the other X-M producers placating her. Big effing star and all. Eh. Forget Movie!Storm isn't quite as (unintentionally) entertaining as watching Halle stuff sushi down her throat and drinking cream "straight up". Movie!Storm? Boring as hell.

At the moment, X3 is looking to be a Storm and Wolverine movie with that Phoenix chick coming in at third "in some respect" (inexplicable as that is considering how X2 ended). Perhaps LSD is a "Swordfish" fan? Maybe I'm shallow because I admit I like the image of Wolverine in a towel, but... even the off-handed idea that an X-Men movie would follow along the lines of something like "Swordfish"? X-Men 3: Swordphoenix, or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned to Love Hugh Jackman (and ONLY Hugh Jackman, cause the rest of this movie? It's total shite) Which seems to be a trend with Hugh's movies (Hell. All of them, barring X-Men).

No news on Ian, Anna or Patrick, but by god, Halle's going to be in it! Rah. [/sarcasm]

I feel your pain. I do.

big huge nod to everything you said. I read that IMDB thing this morning and started yabbering at the screen like the pee'd off fangrl I sometimes am.

I haven't seen raving fan communities dedicated to her X-Men work so far... and hey, did anyone else see Gothika? No? My point exactly.

I did. And I very much regretted it. I had no idea what it was about, thought it was more suspense than anything. Nope. It was awful. Mostly because it had scenes that reminded me of The Ring and I hated that movie.

Movie!Storm? I never thought much about her. I didn't know the character from the comics, have seen some cartoons but not enough as to give me an idea of how Storm was supposed to be. But I still don't want her to take away what time DarkPhoenix, Wolverine, Magneto and/or Rogue (of course *g*) could have.

[identity profile] charon-mmm.livejournal.com 2004-05-12 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
aww, so you did see it. Then we both added 2 to their numbers. *sad sigh* I saw it with hysterical tweenies who screeched at all sudden-ghost-appearances. Awful film for narrative. Loved the Ring though.

Yeah, I'm gunned up for Dark Phoenix -- so much potential, and continuity-wise a lot more sense than inflating sidekick-storm. *hee* Rogue appearing would be nice :)

Halle does have raving fan communities dedicated to her, but I'm hard-pressed to find Movie!Storm specific fans gathering in droves singing praises. Mostly in the Storm-fans camp, it's a range from perturbance to all out rabid fury at the portrayal. But go ahead X-M producers! Give her more screentime! Perhaps it will only be a matter of time before she starts tearing it up to look all sexay or brandishes a whip. That'll learn 'em.

Ugh. Ugh. And did I mention ugh?

I love Hugh as much or more than the next fangirl, but I've been psyched to see the Phoenix storyline in X3 since I saw X2.

And Halle Berry? She can bite me.

Word. X3 should really be all about Jean... and I love me some Famke.

Big UGH. The Phoenix Saga is my favorite out of the X-Men storylines and to have it pushed to the side because of Ms. Ego is going to annoy me.

[identity profile] eido.livejournal.com 2004-05-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said above, this is still just a rumor and hopefully it will stay that way. What would they possibly do to explain away an increased presence for Storm in a Phoenix storyline? She's certainly not all that significant in the comics version and she's given me nothing to want more of her in the movies. I'm still hoping one of the first lines in X3 will be, "Storm is on leave in Cairo mourning Jean."

AGGGHH Fuck that shit. I had no problem with Halle Berry bowing out of the next film because she's too big a star (snerk), so this... blows. I don't care for movie!Storm at all. Give me more Rogue, Bobby, Pyro, PHOENIX... hell, Scott got totally shafted in X2, give HIM more screentime. Oh, right, he's not played by Oscar-winner Halle Berry. Gag me.

[identity profile] eido.livejournal.com 2004-05-12 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Scott got totally shafted in X2, give HIM more screentime.

It makes me wonder what a guy has to do to get more screentime. Cause apparently your wife/fiance dying this big glorious watery self-sacrificial death isn't enough to give you any. Are they going to tell us Scott went off to Tibet and become a monk in his grief or something? No doubt unable to handle the adultering manwhore** stealing all his thunder. Wouldn't blame him. I'm not even all that big of a Cyclops fan and I'm annoyed.

Oh, right, he's not played by Oscar-winner Halle Berry. Gag me.

What are you talking about? "Catwoman" looks amazing... in a Larry Flint sort of way. And you know her paycheck for X3 will be in the 7 digits. Bah. I'd rather watch Magneto read the phone book for two hours than Frankenberry trying to defibulate Storm. If you want to find me... I'll be crying in the corner for Nightcrawler, Pyro, Magneto, Rogue, Colossus, Cyclops and Dark Phoenix.

Wow, so much Halle Berry/Storm hate. Just a thought, but maybe Storm wasn't an interesting character in the movies because she didn't have enough screen time to give her any sort of personality. You're complaining about the same thing happening to Scott, but dismissing the fact that Storm is the same way. She's a major character, yet we hardly saw anything of her.

I don't actually watch the cartoons, or read the comics, but I'm a fan of the movies, and I'm happy that she's coming back. I hope they all come back, most especially Anna, Hugh, and Famke. Still, I'm just being devil's advocate here. She actually does deserve to have it be worthwhile to come back again, they all do.

I've never seen Swordfish, nor do I intend to, but I did see Gothika and I liked it a lot. I'm not her biggest fan evah!!11omg!11, but I'm not dissing her just because she wanted a larger role. If it was Scott, or Rogue, would you be complaining?

[identity profile] eido.livejournal.com 2004-05-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)

I suppose it's all subjective, but this would be under the estimation if Halle were given more screentime, she would do something with it. Based on what I've seen of Movie!Storm so far? Eh. Movie!Storm is completely wooden to me. Nightcrawler didn't get necessarily all that much screentime as compared to some of the other actors and his lines were en par with most of the script, but Alan Cumming brought it to the plate every time (and he was covered in ridiculous blue prosthetics to boot). Halle didn't do anything with Storm that would make me think she or the character should get any more screentime than she's already got.

Once again, it's subjective, but I'd rather see more Cyclops, for example, because as it stands he'd have understandable reason to get more time in X3 (considering what happened and what will be happening to Jean, his fiance), he's team leader (yet we know almost nothing about him) and Marsden, at least, got me to feel something for Cyclops. Couldn't say the same for Storm. She could have gotten cut out of X2 completely and I wouldn't have batted an eyelash. The budget could have probably used the extra coin too.

Halle can go off and be the lead in other movies. Like "Catwoman 2" or something.

::snerk::

Maybe she brings in some all important viewer demographic? Or is that only the all-but-naked Mystique bringing in the 17-35 year old males?

Jean's death better mean angst and big plots for Logan and Scott in some future X-Men screen outing, to reward me dramatically for the actress' bland performance. I cried because those two men cried in the film, but otherwise I was cringing, "Oh, great, now she'll get an even bigger role as Phoenix."

[identity profile] profshallowness.livejournal.com 2004-05-13 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
The more I learn about LSD the more I think her initials are appropriate. X2 basically set up the Phoenix/Dark Phoenix thing (and though I'm not so keen on Janssen's Jean, the angst of the arc and, you know, Jackman's Wolvie and Marsden's really growing on me Cyke make me excited.) Storm. . .not so enthusiastic. Berry's stah power as an actress is so out of proportion to the importance and effect of Movie!Storm. The dichotomy between her role in the promotion of X2 and the film? Huge. Better for her to cut her losses, because it's an ensemble film, really (give or take Wolvie, prob.)

Though I liked the Storm/Nightcrawler and Jean/Storm relationships - what little I saw of them, I think it would be better for the film is Halle just had a Significant Cameo instead of a mish-mash or a larger role that overshadows [insert list of characters I really care about i.e. practically everyone else.]
