TW - 203 - To The Last Man
Good things, all around this ep. I'm surprised how much I liked that without massive amounts of crack and/or margarita shooters to help it go down.
1918 cryogenics? Although I'm reluctant to expend too many brain cells on this show, I presume alien cheating was involved with that somehow. "If it's alien, it's ours", after all.
The ghost story ambiance was genuinely spooky. All very well done. Reminded me of "Bioshock" in some parts. Although I'd wonder if Gwen has ever seen a horror movie? Never go in a room with the flickering lights!
Naoko Mori is quite a good actress. You could have hardly figured that one way or another last series how little they utilized her. I give kudos for the fact they went for subtle grief and crying instead of labored wailing and waterworks, she pulled off subtle very well. Now I just hope she doesn't go back lurking behind her computers again the rest of the series.
Although HN/FoB was better constructed, I found myself empathizing more with Tommy/Tosh then I did John Smith/Joan Redfern, perhaps because Tommy/Tosh wasn't sidled with a whole lot of unpleasantness (subtextual or otherwise). At least I wasn't muttering at Tommy to grow a pair andopen the fucking watch turn the key already since a whole lot of people were dying/about to die. It was also a vast improvement over Tosh's other one-off rel'p with Mary from S1, as Tosh wasn't so obviously a victim and used in the relationship. This time around it was mutual, equally tragic and I believed the feelings were genuine on both sides.
I already knew the guy playing Tommy was Neville Longbottom's brother and I could see the similarities. However, I kept thinking Chris Klein. Better actor than Chris Klein though, thankfully.
Still steady as she goes with the total personality transplants of Owen and Ianto. Sure it's pretty naff writing (in Torchwood?! NO WAI!!), BUT! As I really didn't like Owen or Ianto much at all last series? I just can't complain too loudly about it. Revelations kept coming this ep when we find out Owen, shockingly enough, is actually capable of genuine compassion. His scenes with Tosh were very sweetstill not gonna ship them in that way though.
And Helen Raynor can actually write. Will wonders never cease?
I predict anvilly references to Animal Farm next Wednesday.
