And I blame [livejournal.com profile] vichan completely for this. :P

[livejournal.com profile] vichan was wondering if SPN's typical finale cliffhanger may have something to do with Cas due to how cryptic TPTB and some of the cast are being about Cas/Misha being in S6.

Let's run with that and say, yes, the cliffhanger does have to do with Castiel. Also that - in true Winchester form - it involves a big sacrifice.

However, I remembered we just got a spoiler about Bobby and that Crowley makes him an offer to give him Death's location in exchange for Bobby's soul, of which Bobby reluctantly agrees.

Except I'm not certain how much I believe Bobby is a goner. And though I love Bobby and he is a major fixture in the show, he's never had regular status like Castiel has and, let's be honest, not the same numbers of fans (aka, batfudge nuts fangirls). Basically, something happening to Castiel, in true SPN finale form, would probably make fandom shout a lot louder and longer through the summer than something happening to Bobby.

What if Castiel goes to Crowley and offers up himself in Bobby's place, unbeknownst to Dean, Sam or Bobby? Castiel was already willing to kill himself so he wouldn't have to watch Dean fail all to give Dean & Sam a chance to save their baby brother, Adam and all despite believing Dean's completely given up and wants to say yes. I could believe Cas would be willing to sacrifice himself again, this time in a seemingly very final, terrible way, so Dean & Sam don't lose Bobby.

So, Castiel sacrifices himself to Crowley so Bobby won't go to Hell and Dean & Sam (but mostly Dean) wouldn't have to suffer losing their father figure after having lost so much already. Dean especially would have known what would happen to Bobby if he went down there. Because it's Cas' job to bring Dean peace, not pain. *wibbles*

Cas would still be alive (so the fangirls wouldn't have to pull out the pitchforks) and this could give Dean & Sam a new mission for S6, Harrow the hell out of Hell and save Cas. In the meantime, try to mend their relationship. Hell that might have gotten a total rehaul after Lucifer's likely demise the end of this season and largely looks remarkably like Canada. Canada on crack with a side of LSD, maybe, but Canada nonetheless. So, S6... the Winchesters storm the Hell castle to save Dean's love their friend? I could roll with that.

Why you gotta do me like that? But I guess if Canada looks like both Heaven and Hell, it all balances out in the end.

I like this idea but it somehow seems unlikely, if only because them travelling through hell would negate a lot of the ghost and ghoul hunting it seems like the writers want to bring back. Also, it's hard for me to imagine them making a whole season about Cas, as much as I would love it.

IIRC, they fought a lot of demons in S1 & S2. Then again, I'd wonder where all those vampires, werewolves and Wendigos, etc etc go when they die. Probably not Matrix!Heaven. Maybe whoever has Cas throws everything and the kitchen sink at the boys to keep from getting to Cas?

My guess, Hell may end up looking like Canada in "The End". Maybe a lot of mileage will be made on that ex-Watchmen set they dropped major coin on? Or I'm just hoping for that since I thought that set was BAMF. lolz

Not gonna lie, I would love this.

But to be clear: would Cas be IN hell, or would he still be with them, with the clock ticking?

Yeah, this would make a huge difference to me. I would not appreciate the former at ALL on the actual show because I would prefer to ACTUALLY SEE CAS MORE OFTEN? D:

'or would he still be with them, with the clock ticking?'
Please let it be this one. I want to see more of Cas not less.

As I pictured the spec, Cas is in Hell and maybe in Lucifer's old cage. For some reason, I keep thinking the cage is like another version of The Matrix a la Heaven. Cas trapped in his own head, but those waking moments occupied by Crowley or Meg probably snarking at him.

'I could believe Cas would be willing to sacrifice himself again, this time in a seemingly very final, terrible way, so Dean & Sam don't lose Bobby.'
I can see that.

I readily admit the spec came partly from Karen's line in "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid". "He's my husband, my job is to bring him peace, not pain." Cas willing to do anything and everything for Dean, but why? Save the world... or just save Dean? Then again, technically saving Dean IS saving the world in prophecy-speak, but we've got two scenes Cas angrily declares he did everything for Dean specifically. If Cas does sacrifice himself for Bobby, I'd guess it's for Dean again, except this particular sacrifice not really so much about the good of the world as much as it would be for Dean's emotional and psychological well being, which Cas may be desperate to protect.

That sounds about right.

This will probably neverrr be canon but it would make an AMAZING fanfic.

Honestly, while they're obviously trying to make us anxious for Cas, I really doubt that he's a big enough character to be ~THE~ cliffhanger. Cliffhangers in previous seasons have all had to do with Sam, Dean, or the major plot; the car crash, Dean's deal, Dean going to hell, Lucifer rising with Sam and Dean in the room (they cliffhung Cas too, but his fate wasn't the major source of suspense) -- idk, I don't really see them breaking their pattern to make next season's prevalent hook Castiel's fate. On a similar note, Dean and Sam storming hell wouldn't really fit the "back to basics" approach we've been promised.

Then again, it's always focused on Dean or Sam before since they were always the only two regulars, up until S5. They still might get something big, and maybe it's the main thing, specifically focused on them too. Something happening to Cas may just be another layer of the cliffie to pile on the Dean angst.

Oh, its likely there will be some sort of cliffhanger for Cas, I just don't think it will be so big as "Castiel goes to hell and S6 will be about getting him back!"
